in the wilderness

Amen! If I had to live the rest of my life with only one knife (heaven forbid!) it would be a Vic Rucksack.
Gene :D

I've noticed a curious trend in my life, one which I plan to reverse - the more specialty outdoor gear I have aquired oover the last 5 years (knives in particular) the less I have been bush

When I think back 10 years ago, when I was doing something in the bush almost every weekend and at least 3 long adventures every year my equipment was a jumble of cheap stuff that was heavy, but worked - and my only knife was a SAK rucksack. That saw was used almost more than the blade.

I was looking through the gear today, and the same thing occurred to me.
I have everything that opens and shuts for every conceivable situation, and yet I go bush less than I used to.

Am I spending too much time planning and not enough doing?

Back on topic, K-Bar, 12" kukri or machete.

I'm not familiar with the knife, but looking at the responses, which covers SAKs to choppers, I figure that pretty much any knife would fit the bill. That is, as long as you have the skills necessary to make it work for you.

I would take my Paratraxx....but, I'm partial. :D With it's saw, draw, slice, dice, cut, gut, and a small knife safely tucked away in the handle, it is just the all around wilderness knife. For the money, I believe it is well worth it's price.

Well if I knew I was going to run into the bear and couldn't avoid it I'd take my 29" tachi with the 13" tsuka and my WSK. If there was no bear I'd take my WSK. And the McDs doesn't matter to me much, I don't eat that poison anyway. I'd starve or eat grasshoppers before I ate at McDs.

The one knife concept is not too far fetched.

How do you wind up in the woods with one knife? Short answer, you only took one. That's hard to imagine in this group, who of us would only take one knife. The rest of the collection complains so loudly, its kind of like taking only one of your kids to Disneyland!

Long answer, you lost all of your other gear either: crossing a river, the boat overturned, the jeep caught fire, the plane went down ugly, you fell through the ice and ditched the pack that was dragging you under, someone found your cache

In that case you will have the knife you strapped onto your belt or clipped to your pocket. My belt knife is normally a sturdy fixed blade set up as a PSK.
Most often this is either and AFSK or Becker BK-7. The kit contained with the knife contains resources that help me cope with nature and provide shelter, fire, water, navigation, light, food gathering, minor meds, and clothing repair. I have actually been in need of all of these things at some point in the wilderness under normal conditions. I've learned the hard way and now my knife covers these things for me. Mac

I would hope to have my TTW knife. I have a Beck tracker and this out preforms that knife. I do love the tracker but I prefer a blade similar to this one for all around use.
7.5" blade (3/16" 0-1) 13.25" overall.

That looks great. I love the sheath design. I wouldn't mind having that in the woods

:D I keep telling my wife this but she doesn't hear them. Each one pleading its special talents in myriad sharp little voices.... "What if there's a bear?" "You need ME to butcher a deer!" "You can't go fishing without your ol' buddy!" "How are you going to build a shelter with just HIM?" "Take me! I've never failed you, have I?" "But I'm your FAVORITE and she'll cut you!"

Brain,
That is an exceptional looking knife, what other in the 7" class should aspire to. Excellent work.

If you were there.. dropped right in the wilderness... hundreds of miles from the nearest road....3 miles from the nearest mcdonalds... with just the clothes you have on you.. and one knife of your choice.. to do all the tasks you may need.. cutting bushes, branches, defending yourselves from grizzlys the size of a small car on its end.. dulaps flapping with drool and enraged eyes as the cost of a big mac has increased 15p. Well anyway, what would you take? I personally would take my SOG tsunami. I have three knives, the other 2 are cheap lock knives but one is very sturdy and well made out of stainless steel the number I dont know or w.e you call it. Anyone got any points for me on the tsunami in this situation or any others any information I would be very grateful for!

Many thanks,

I'd probably walk to that McDonalds. It's only 3 miles away.
