In Waistband (IWB) Folder Carry...

This is my preferred method of carry, and I clip the folder onto my pants at about 1/3 across the front width of my hips (if that makes any sense). and I keep it at a slant so as not to feel it when sitting at the desk or the car. Any justification for carrying it elsewhere on the waist, such as the side or back? Any suggestions for optimizing IWB carry without a belt or sheath? I know this question might be kinda stupid, but who knows what insight might surface from the omniscient folks here @ BF. Thanks in advance.

Great carry for the office. I wore mine about 2:00, clip under the belt, practically invisible, but easier to retrieve than if it were clipped to my pocket. I wouldn't want it anywhere further back where I would have to reach for it.

my crawford perfigo has a stud instead of the pocket clip for carry just like described, works really well in that regard also, faster than a clip to draw, still secure, am suprised other smiths dont use that method. it also came drilled for a pocket clip which i install occasionally, but the stud is ok for pocket carry also so have been using that for a while now.

I carry my knife IWB, it is very comfy for me!! I find it an excellent way to carry, in my opinion.

I carry a Spyderco Atlantic Salt IWB at 3:00. It's thin and light enough that I don't notice it's there. I carry it there instead of my left pocket (main folder goes in the right) since I keep my wallet/keys in my left pocket there, and can't get them out easily with a knife in there.

Please don't misunderstand my comments here, but I for some reason don't get it. Why IWB when you have a perfectly good pocket to clip it to? Esav said that it is easier to reach IWB when seated, and I understand that.

Is that the reason that the rest of you carry it this way rather than in the pocket? Or is it a matter of better concealibility? Here in the Great Plains I've never had a single issue with anybody taking offense at a knife plainly clipped to my pocket, but understand that in other places, that's not the case.

However, I spent almost a week in Boston seven or eight years ago, walked the entire freedom trail, went to the Boston Symphony Hall twice, and even to the Boston Ballet (Nutcracker), all with a four inch folder clipped in the pocket in plain sight, and never had a second look.

Are there other reasons as well?

I felt that in an office environment, a knife might be less welcome than elsewhere, and I don't need to advertise what I'm carrying anyway. Also, it is much more secure. If you brush up against equipment or a seat belt, a pocket-clipped knife could snag. Also, it frees the pocket for whatever else you're carrying in it, without having to push past the knife.

In Boston, they're so scared of knives, they might not even have known what the clip was for! :D

Well, you boys have convinced me to give it a try, just to see for myself. I will NOT use my Military for this, however, as more than once I've had it open up (have tightened it way down, now, though). That's one of the main reasons that I got the Manix. I'll give it a whirl with that.

If you carry other items in your pocket then IWB is a good alternative to fishing past your knife to get your wallet/phone/chewing gum. I don't think it works as well for small folders. A larger handle will stay put IWB but a smaller one seems to move around and work its way loose.

If you happen to lean against your car checking the oil or refilling the window washer, you may find another reason for not having it clipped to a pocket.

Im a little confused. When you carry it do you carry in between the belt and the pants or on the inside of the pants?

Rededge77,
For me it's inside the pants. The clip clips only the waistband of the pants and lies under the belt. Black clips on dark pants are almost invisible.

I would think the knife inside the pants and the clip on the outside of the pants, but behind the belt.

My FB carry is in a sheath between the belt and the pants. The folder is carried in a belt pouch on the outside of the belt. All this is covered with an untucked shirt. It's enough to meet the requirements of being 'concealed' for my CCW, but would never work in an office environment with tucked in shirts and slacks rather than BDU's.

My favorite way of carry too. My EDC used to be a modified Spyderco Delica with a low rider wire clip that made it practically invisible.
Right now I carry a Spyderco Adventura, with the clip set for tip down carry. It is pretty discreet too, with the clip hidden under the belt. IWB, right front.

I carry IWB when I'm wearing sweatpants etc, khakis and jeans I wear it clipped to my pocket. If I'm wearing cargo pants or shorts, I keep it in the pocket closer to the knees. Not as easy to get to, but it stays out of the way.

I carry IWB but at 5 o'clock. for me it is just more convient that way. If I clip it in my pocket it always seems to get caught on something and if I just pocket carry it is hard to get to.

Thanks for the responses. I've never tried an IWB/under the belt situation, but I will as soon as the next opportunity arises.

IWB Right Side, Rear. The most comfortable, and easy to get to.

Why?:
I am a small person so, if I carry in front pocket - knife gets in way if I bend over.

If I carry in rear pocket - knife eats a hole on pocket. (skinny rear end)
I've had a knife work it's way out of my rear pocket.
