I am probably wrong, but, I was thinking he meant the S&W HRT magnesium handled folder. It was designed by Darrel Ralph and Matt Lamprey. Credit is given for the design. IMO, S&W is turning over a new leaf. Quality is up and makers are getting credit. I hear they are also under new ownership. Anyone know for sure?

WT Beck,

I think the difference between the new AFCK and the old one is the shape of the opening hole. Benchmade licensed the round hole from Spyderco on the original. They are now using an oval shaped hole.

And then of course there is the 805(?) which is the Axis-Lock version, which some argue is not an AFCK at all.

Anyway, which ever one you get, I think you'd be happy. You really might be better served to go into a cutlery shop armed with some information on the knives you're interested in, and handle them and see what works for you. I would encourage you to pay the extra that a brick and mortar shop charges, to be able to handle the knives in person.

Magician,

The knife mentioned was indeed the S&W HRT Ralph/Lamprey. Contrary to RH, the knife is actually made pretty well and is not a "ripoff." I got to handle one at a local shop and it feels good in the hand. A bit like a skinny Ken Onion handle. It's built well and the flipper thing is really cool. You can find them for 45 bucks, and they're a bargain at that price. Nice looking, too.

Thanks for the info, UW Mitch,

There is another recent thread on knife shops and the advantages of using them. I live in a suburb of Atlanta, and believe it or not, I have not been able to find a single true knife store in this city of 4.1 million people. There is one sporting goods store way across town from where I live that has a good selection of knives, but nothing near where I live. Sometimes there are knife dealers at gun shows, and of course once each year there is the Blade Show. Also, Atlanta has some prominent custom makers (Rade Hawkins lives just a few miles from me.) However, if there is a knife shop around here, it isn't listed in the yellow pages, and I haven't run across it yet.

W.T.

If you live near a Walmart, I beleive they are starting to carry some of the Kershaw/Ken Onion knives. As I mentioned I think the Vapor is a great buy. You might try checking it out.

Thanks again, UW,

I recently bought a Shrade Old Timer stockman at a nearby Walmart, but I was looking specifically for a carbon steel slipjoint and didn't pay any attention to the other knives. I'll have to check out that Vapor.

There are hardware stores, military surplus, and gun shops around Atlanta that sell knives, but I have yet find a true, dedicated knife shop here.

804 has an oval hole, 154CM steel.
800 had a round hole, ATS34 steel.

IMHO, Emerson mini-CQC7, waved CQC7.

Yeah, there is no best, but Spyderco, Benchmade, the Camillus EDC, and CRKT all have some nice offering for under 100, it depends on what you like.

If you don't mind spending just a few dollars over the $100 limit, then the Emerson Mini Commander is excellent. I got one for $106 plus some change from Discount Knives just before Xmas. Unfortunately the free shipping deal ended Dec. 24, so you would have to add that to the total now.

I like the handle shape on the Commander models - very secure compared to most folders.

I just recived a S&W H.R.T. as a gift (it's about $50). It is exceptionally sharp out of the box and the fit/finish on the one I have is excellent. Good secure lockup, nice weight and feel. This knife is as good, if not better, than any CRKT I have and CRKT is one of my favorite affordable production companies.:)

hey blademan the late production 800 model AFCK's had 154CM, i have one, w/the round hole and black plain edge blade - i dont think many were made, also have a ATS34 800S and a M2HSS

There is no "best" knife but the one I like a lot is the Spyderco Endura series, it is what I carry in my pocket 90% of the time. Lightweight, scarey-sharp and ambidexterous. The last feature is really important to me as I'm left-handed so the ability for a knife to be opened and closed with either hand means a lot to me.
I recently picked up a couple of the CRKT Ryan "Seven" folders (one plain-edged and one combo-edged) and found it to be very nice for the money spent--nice blade shape, razor-sharp from the factory, ambi-thumb-studs with good, comfortable grips. It has solid-feeling liner lock(I really don't like them but in this case I'll make an exception)with a LAWKs for added safety on cutting up the tough stuff.
Best of all, you can pick up a pair of them for under a $100.

A lot of you guys are gonna cringe but, I have been carrying the Boker Walker design liner lock. Not sure of the model #. (I rarely pay attention that.) This model has the Cocabolo scales. The sleek, contour design fits easy in the pocket.(no pocket clip or seatbelt hanger) ATS-34 well designed blade. I originally bought it just to check it out. I was really impressed with the fit and finish of it. Has the look and feel of a custom. It really does! The only thing that I don't like is the open back design. With the knife being so easy to carry, I keep it in my back pocket where it doesn't become a coin catcher. I gave about 50 bucks for it. I'm tellin' ya!

Yes this knife is the one I referred to. Darrel Ralph took great pains to insure Taylor Cutlery (who pays a fee to use S&Ws name) made these right. He and Mike Lamprey were both willing to walk away from the deal (and a bunch of $) if the knives weren't made right. How refreshing to see custom makers go to the mat for those of us who cannot (or will not) spend the high dollars for the handmade custom stuff.

This knife is absolutely top quality. I have one I have flipped over 1000 times (yes I counted). Still tight & wobble free. I source knives for several law enforcement agencies, so the flipping 1000X is not because I'm just a lonely guy ;) .

EXCELLENT KNIFE...certainly not inferior in any way.
