Incidence of hoplophobia?

pencils!!! i still have the gray mark the graphite made in my palm when in the 2nd grade i got stabbed by one. it went in effortlessly. i got an idea!!! lets use fingerpaints and big sheets of paper to write instead, that should be safer. lets outlaw the scourge of deadly weapons we call #2 pencils.

seriously though as a society its being super politically correct, "pussification" is a great term for it.

had my custom fixed blade on my belt the last few days and interestingly the only place i sensed any fear was at a starbucks walkup window. This in Portland Oregon - sheesh

I guess I'm just lucky in that I live in Texas, but I walk around campus everyday with my ZT's and other large knives. We almost passed a College concealed carry bill, but the two democrats backed down when it came time to push it on through. Guess there's always next year. I'm an avid gun rights supporter, as well as knife rights.

Meh i agree with most of the things i hear but i dislike the general resentment towards liberals here because i am VERY left leaning. I dislike that liberals are in general blamed for blade bans, my fiancee's mother is very right wing and about lost her mind when my fiancee started carrying a knife.

I could be wrong, but i thought hoplophobia is the fear of armed men, coming from the Greek word, "hoplite" <---hope i spelled it right.
"

The word "hoplon" in Greek means "armor", mainly, the shield that the hoplite carried. The word hoplophobia as somebody else said, was coined by Col. Jeff Cooper and it would mean "fear of weapons". Medically, it's not a phobia, but that is another story

Lol oi well cant win em all ;) - hey chevyScott u talkin open carry of fixed blades too ? Im curious bcz some1 told me Texas has strict carry laws.

In Texas, you can carry any blade as long as it's 5.5 inches and under. No daggers or automatics can be carried, either. There is no requirement to conceal or not conceal.

thanks 4 the info ^ bud, and god bless Texas ;)

My pleasure, but despite the higher acceptance of knives in Texas, I still think twice about wearing any fixed blade in public. The only one I do keep on me on a regular basis is attached to my backpack that goes everywhere with me.. Both the knife (BM Nimravus) and pack are all black, so it's not as noticeable (plus, it's easy to cover with my arm if need be, which looks as if I'm holding onto the shoulder straps). For instance, I won't carry my short Ka-Bar on my belt unless it's at night or in a wooded area.

i understand u very well - what im doing is excercising my right 2 carry bcz rights are alot like muscles

I always wonder exactly where all this anti knife attitude comes from. School ? Women's magazines ? Morning television ? General news media ? $pecial interest groups similar to Handgun Control Inc. ? Political candidates with no intelligent agenda ? Simple dirty, name calling, political campaign strategies ?

TV and movies. And real life. People see knives used as weapons on the screen every day. Usually by the Bad Guy. Then they see news stories of people being stabbed, and students bringing blades to school, and they assume everybody with a knife is out to kill people. 9/11 didn't help either, but this is hardly recent. Knives like switchblades and butterflies got a bad rap many decades earlier, and again it was a combination of the screen and real life. Thus all the laws and bans. The "problem" with the knife is that it's an extremely useful tool, but it's also an extremely dangerous weapon. People like us can argue all we want about it being a tool, not a weapon (and be correct), but that doesn't nullify its effectiveness as a deadly weapon. And there will always be some people that only see it as a weapon first, tool second. Or only weapon.

At least, that's the way it is in the US. In the UK, it's seen differently. In the UK, there was a gun "problem" so they banned guns. With guns gone, criminals turned to the next best thing for crime: knives. Now the UK has a knife "problem". And too many people there realize that it's not a "gun problem" or a "knife problem", as those are only the tools of the criminals, and what they actually have is a criminal problem. Criminals use, always have used, and will continue to use the most effective, easily attainable implement with which they can best augment their crimes.

I'm to be a groomsman in an upcoming wedding, so I bought a nice fancy classic styled folder from A.G. Russell, just to have a nice classy non-threatening knife on me. I show it to a coworker/friend and he of coarse replies, "Why would you need to stab anyone at a wedding?" ....sheeesh, I explained that it simply comes in handy for so many things, I hate to be without a knife. Funny thing is he is even a bit of an outdoorsman himself, and I had just recently sharpened all his fishing and pocket knives for him, yet he still saw my little folder as a scarry weapon rather than usefull tool.

Also funny how a friend of mine who is also a farmer gets scared and freeks out a little every time I pull out a little SAK, or my tiny little Kershaw Chive to cut something. He gets all nervous and starts looking around like hes expecting someone to start screaming, or a swat team to swoop in to take me down for using such a weapon in public. .....and this guy is a FARMER! He grew up on a farm, farms for a living, and has NEVER owned a pocket knife in his life!!! That is just crazy to me.

maybe some people actually should be scared if any1 gets my drift ie that some hoplophobes may be well aware that they have mistreated and do mistreat their fellow man
