Inconspicuous knife for inconspicuous life.

I agree completely, Jackknife. Well done! That made me think about Dad's little brown peanut that was in his gear somewhere when he went ashore at Omaha Beach on that bloody day. I still have it.

I rented a movie last night. "The Good Shepherd" with Matt Damon and Robert DeNiro.

Good movie about Cold War Espionage and it made me think of this story. If you've not seen it Jacknife, I think you might like it.

Salute to the grey men. This one makes me cry. My son learned to walk, talk while I was at war. Missed my daughter's first year of school.

I took a teaching job to get out of that life.

"I took a teaching job to get out of that life." - sixgunner455

Excellent choice, sixgunner. For those who have lived the kind of life discussed here, a saying from an old movie about the special operations/clandestine service life comes to mind:

First man: "We've missed out on a lot of things with our families in our life...our chosen career."

Second man: "No, you're wrong, my friend...we've missed out on everything!"

Jackknife, all I can say is thank you.

But I must admit I have never ever heard a man say he regretted spending too much time with his children. Sometimes we get caught up in the rat race to keep up with the Jones' and miss the most important time in our children's lives, I Did and have my own regrets.

I usually don't read long posts, (lazyness I guess), but I'm glad I read this one. What a wonderfully written story. I was rivitet from start to end. Thanks, I will be on the look out for your posts. I'm now going to click on the Peanut thread below this one!
