Incredible Deals/Treasures Found

Good deals everyone.

I've got a thing for old knives so that has been most of my best deals or treasures. While not the cheapest at 150.00 this Case Tested Barlow was found in unused condition, very rare for a Barlow that old.

This Catt was found for 40 bucks, not common with a sheepsfoot blade,

Another recent find for 20 bucks, a Dwight Divine Ulster,

Very nice finds Augie. I really like that Cattaraugus. The shield just sets it off imo.

Some VERY impressive finds/discoveries of treasure here  In Europe, it's really hard to find anything much in the way of decent knives, second-hand. Lot of tired old junk knocking about but most of it is cheap nasty knives that only a hoarder would be interested in:barf:

Augie, that Catt is a fine looking knife and a real find:thumbup:

The only finds I come across are in my dreams...:D I chance upon a box filled with knives from 1914, Sheffield and Solingen's finest, together with choice American examples, all stowed away in their boxes and wrappers just before the First World War engulfed Europe. Left and forgotten like a mammoth entombed in the ice until I chance upon them:) Then I wake up :D:D Well, dreams are certainly better than no dreams, or nightmares.

I look forward to seeing more on this thread:thumbup:

Thanks, Will

Beautiful CASE!

Today while going through a store room at Mom's, I stumbled onto something that in the low light buried under a pile of old tools that had belonged to my dad. Dad horded tools from his days as a steel worker. After retirement he and Mom bought houses to fix up and use as rental property. Over the years since his passing Mom has gotten rid of a lot, but occasionally, I'll stumble across something interesting. Such was the case today while looking for something else entirely. There on a shelf, buried under some old rusted putty knives was a little Hawbill. At first I thought it was another putty knife, due to the low light, dirt and rust. Then I started looking and thought it was fixed, but after I got it into the light I realized it was a folder that was rusted open.

So after a few hours, sandpaper, oil, and stones, it cleaned up nicely. Turns out it's an old Sabre 645 with what appears to be rosewood covers. I had no idea what it was before I knocked the rust off. Still trying to flush some grit, but it will get there. This is going to end up in my tool bag to help me when I take over the rental property.

Please forgive the pics. Horrible light today.

Those are the real special finds. You did that Sabre hawk proud and I imagine it will provide years of service. I have a couple Sabres and all of them have been acquired for what I consider a really good deal.

Your post reminded me of how I acquired my Sabres and how each time I'd find myself impressed with the build quality and the materials for such bargain-priced knives, so I figured I'd include some in this thread.

Most of the Sabres I have are Japanese made Barlows. The bone granddaddy Barlow was the first I acquired and gets carried with some regularity; the pin crack on the end of the pile side was apparently my doing, as was the repair. :o  The bone Sabres are really attractive knives, not at all emblematic of a "cheap import". I picked up both of the Delrin granddaddies fairly recently. Oddly, the bone granddaddy is stamped with a model number "29" while the Delrin models are stamped "629". There is no model number stamped on either blade of the regular Barlow, but I have seen Delrin versions marked with "603". I don't believe I paid more than $15 for any of these. To me, money well spent: These knives are built solid.

This wood-handled Sabre 635 was the first Sabre in my collection. I've always been a fan of the linesman's knife. I believe this was my first wood-handled slippy. IIRC this one cost me just north of $15.

This is a Sabre 624 fish knife from Hong Kong. It is very similar to the Imperials and related clamshell fish knives of the mid-late 20th century. The blade is thin and slicy mystery stainless (440A?) but the build quality is not really on par with the Japanese knives. I did a little research on the knife and found some claims that Ka-bar had been involved with these knives; while the tang stamp's font does somewhat resemble the Ka-bar block stamp, I compared it to some Ka-bar toothpicks and only the thinness of the blade really matched. I paid some silly low price for this last year, I believe under $10.

Some amazing bargains in this thread!

This is probably my best find. A great old Henckels that I bought at an antique store for $22

$31.99 at the Zone 6 PX at Camp Arifjan, KU. Yep, a zero was missing. 32 bucks! There were tree. A bubby bought all three. A coworker brought it back for me a couple of weeks ago. CRK GB 5.5".

Too big and heavy for me. Was going to use it as trading material, but I think I'll give it away. Have it narrowed down to a couple of people.

Ok, you win. I'll give you $40 for it and pay shipping/PayPal cost. You come out way ahead and be rid of that ugly thing. [emoji2]

Very nice. Did it look like that when you originally found It? Or did you do some of your magic on it?

Man, thats a great looking knife Randy. [emoji106] I picked these up Thursday. I don't know if it qualifies as an incredible deal but I didn't mind paying the 15 bucks for them.

That one on the left looks like the knife I had as a teenager. I loved that thing. I remember drooling over it at the store, and then buying it with part of my birthday money on my 13th birthday.

Some great knives here gents, and everyone loves a bargain :)

I'm not sure if it's a treasure or an incredible deal, I'm hoping one of you can tell me. I think I got it for around $10.

I've seen them before with the fish scaler separate from the main blade and it is clearly an Imperial but that's All I can tell. Anyone know anything more about these?

Looks pretty much all intact, minimal to no blade loss, patina but not rusted, decent covers. That's the medium/~4.25" frame, correct? I have seen far fewer with the single-blade, I imagine there are fewer clean ones to be had. I'd say $10 is a pretty good bargain for that knife. Clamshell, obviously, ~40s-50s perhaps? It has the "PROV USA" not PROV RI" stamp with "USA" down the right side, so I think that puts it on the earlier end of Imperial's clamshell years. They pop up in that big body of water in all sorts of conditions, for all sorts of prices. Your handles are clean, bolsters look intact/unbent, I believe the fish shield is desirable (though not as much as the hook sharpener); if both sides are dent/crimp-free then I'd say a little elbow grease and some detail work with a toothbrush or nylon brush makes that knife more valuable to a collector than a ten-spot. Can't argue with a classic piece of 20th century American cutlery.

Alternately, you can send that knife off to Jeff (jprime84) and see what kind of magic he can work after he finishes an ebony Barlow. ;) :D

Even I wouldn't mess with a beauty like this, that's pretty much as I found it!

Wow, thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to give me all that info. I'm glad I picked this one up. The bolsters and covers are dent/crimp free on both sides. I haven't really taken the time to clean it up yet. I'll clean it up soon and I'll definitely check out jprime84's work. Thanks again, I'm glad I posted about it here.
