Would like some advice on assited opening folders that open with the index finger instead of the thumb.

A crushed thumb prevents me from making the motion to use a thumb stud.

Thanks,

Bill Stephens

Kershaw has quite a few flippers with assisted opener feature. Google the Kershaw Leeks for affordability and numerous configurations.

Kershaw, or Zero Tolerance (also a division of Kershaw).
If you want to go custom, Ken Onion. He makes flipper knives, and did designs for Kershaw.

Another one for Kershaw, I have one that I'm very happy with. The spring assist has a nice solid snap to it!

Yup, if you're interested in flippers and/or assisted opening, Kershaw is the way to go.

My father has an injury to the nerves in his thumb and prefers the flipper as well. His personal favorite out of over a dozen Kershaw/ZT options is the ZT0350. He said it gives him a good grip because it's wide and has a good texture since his thumb doesnt help him grasp much.

Hey Joe how does closing of the knife go for your Pop? I'm just thinking about closing all of the listed knives and every one of them is either a liner or frame lock which I always use my thumb to activate. Does closing ever cause him a problem?

I would suggest an Aluminum Bump. The thumbstud lock may work well for the OP. I sometimes use my forefinger for getting to the thumbstud lock.

He has enough strength to disengage the lock. He struggles a bit, but he can do it.

The Bump may really be one of the best choices. On the hand I rarely use my thumb to actually disengage the lock on my liner locks. I brace the back of the blade against the side of my leg and use my thumb as more of a brace/backstop and release the lock with my index finger.

I agree the Speed Bump would be a great choice .I love mine and I often use my index finger to unlock the stud lock .I would look around for the aluminum handle version ,you should be able to find one at a pretty good price if you have a little while to look.

How about a Benchmade Axis lock knife like a Griptilian? They can be easily opened and closed with the index finger.

The stud locks or Hawk locks from Kershaw might be what you're looking for. In smaller knives, look at the Mini Mojito (stud lock) or the RAM (Hawk lock). The RAM isn't assisted, but it opens and closes very easily with one hand, and is thumb friendly!

Kershaw makes quite a few tang flipper type knives.

Another (non-assisted) knife would me something like the M16 or M21 from CRKT.
