IndianSilver on Ebay, aka Joe Dennard, and his Ek #5's

I got my second Ek #5 from Indiansilver and it's confirmed that these knives are second rate rejects. I have examples from another seller which were pristine, well made and perfectly fitted from out of the Effingham factory.

This is not necessarily an accusation against Joe himself or his company, but rather that his #5's are not up to par. Both knives came with extremely bad grind lines where too much metal was removed from one side of the blade. Also, the walnut slab grips were mismatched and carved haphazardly. Machining marks are left on the handguard and tang, and every crevace on the knife is filled with some sort of sandy grit.
I suspect that these examples are slapped together out of reject parts or entire forgeries.

Again, this is not an attack on Joe's character as he may very well NOT know that these knives are crap... I don't know anything about his other items, but if you were considering a #5 from him, know that chances are that you will get a substandard item.

Well, i dont know the seller or the knives, but i DO know Ebay, this guy has a 99.9% positive feedback rating after about 1300 transactions, and that just aint easy to do, particularly if you're screwing people. So, i would have to conclude that if what you say is true and he sold a substandard item, he probably didnt know about it, and more importantly, its not the norm for him, if it was he would have racked up lots of negatives by now.

I'm an Ebay powerseller, selling fairly expensive, high-end fossils, took me a few years and a lot of hard work to rack up only 300 positive transactions, i have never done anything the slightest bit dishonest and i STILL got one negative some years ago because the buyer was pissed that the item was damaged in shipping, even though i offered him a full refund! My point is, even if you do everything right, you can STILL easily have a few negatives because on Ebay, as with any business, you simply cannot please every single customer, and this guy has 1300 positives with a single negative, and again, thats VERY tough to accomplish and would only happen if youre scrupulously honest and customer service oriented. Most retail stores would be THRILLED if they made even 90% of their customers happy, let alone 99.9%! My rating is 99.6% and im still proud of that.

My personal rule of thumb on Ebay is if the guy has 99% or higher positives, he's safe to buy from. Sometimes you'll see a guy with a hundred negatives, and you are just about to write him off, until you see he has like 38,000 positives! Its the percentage, the ratio of bad to good that matters in my opinion. And yes, there are actually sellers with 30, 40, even 50 THOUSAND positives! Makes me and my measly little 300 seem very wimpy. :)

Yes, I agree Meg,
He's been an extremely nice guy to deal with, but it seems that this batch of #5's are substandard.

I don't want to return the #5's cause they are not easy to get, but I'm also a little perturbed that they are substandard.

I posted above and want to stress again that this is not an accusation that Joe is dealing in an unscrupulous manner... Only that this batch of #5's are substandard...

here are the pics...
