Induction Forges?

I did a little research about these last week. I'd love to know also. They seemed to get very hot, enough to melt. Perhaps too hot in too small of an area.

I eagerly await a response from the more informed.

I can see a great advantage in reduced heat times, no fuel consumption, and a safer work environment (assuming it's really safe that is) than burning fuel, however, I am left with a concern on how they work specifically with knife blade shapes. My concern is over-heating the thin edge which is obviously an integral part of a knife or if this is even a concern at all. I know odd shapes can be worked by these machines but that's only been shown to me for general blacksmithing and I wonder if any bladesmiths have employed this forging tool yet on knives?

BTW, I'm particularly impressed with the pancake coil over fire brick set up for blade work, seems ideal.

i was watching it on Youtube . , but seen like it would be a problem trying to stable the heat as well as control so you do not over heat your steel .

but i believe this maybe the future . i myself been trying to do research.

hope to see more info also .

`I think it would be great for forging, and could also do very well for HT if set up properly. Talk to Grant Sarver (I think) who makes the Off-Center brand tongs. I believe he uses and induction setup for eat treating of his tongs. If you install a thermocouple you can have the induction setup control the heat for you I believe. Induction heating is used heavily in industry for heat treating.

Yup... talk with Grant over at OCP Tools...
He's a great guy and will help you out with lots of answers to your questions and can point you in the direction of users who can give you their thoughts on your questions... both blacksmiths and bladesmiths...
Here's my set up.... not many vids but did it a while back to give folks some idea of what it can do.... very controllable and easy to set and operate...
Low electrical consumption cost... even by itself... but even more so compared to propane or other fuels...
It won't do every think you want a forge to do... but it will do alot very very fast...
Hope that helps...
