Has anyone here tried it?

Sure , I've melted steel with it ! For a knife it's difficult to control . Variables are frequency, power ,time.

Yes I've got one and forge blades with it all the time.... it's completely changed the way I forge blades. The only time I use my gas forges now are mostly for welding and forging large work. Great tool for bladesmithing IMHO. Also excellent for normalizing but not good for HT as Mete said.

I bought a mini ductor for soldering and to test the waters of the induction heaters. What little I have been able to use it on it has performed ok. It works pretty good if you need to bend a wrench or screwdriver. I haven't had the chance to find out if it does any good with solder.
