Is anyone familiar with the kind of grinding machine seen on page 19 of the April issue of Knives Illustrated in the article about Daniel Winkler's tactical line? The one in the middle two pictures on the left side of the page.

The pictures are small and you can't tell much detail. Looking online has availed me nothing, and I can't find video.

Is this the kind of setup that would be in a production knife factory? Or some kind of machine shop tool that's been adapted to knifemaking?

Some kind of disc grinder. A lot of the big guys use the Berger CNC machines out of Germany. VERY pricey new.

James-

Daniel's still got a solid contact page on his website - phone, email and address. Let you fingers do the walking man...

I admire your approach to tool making BTW; you have built some seriously cool gear.

Regards,
Andy

Thanks, guys.

Andy - Reckon I ought to send Daniel an e-mail then. Thanks for that info. The home-brewed machinery in my shop was mostly built by my cousin with my direction. I've done some changes and tweaking and repairs (mostly to where I've tweaked them), but he did the vast majority of the work. If I'd known better, I'd have directed him better. :) The major thing is that I'd turn the I-beams on the hydraulic press 90 degrees, so that the cylinders could use the flanges to guide the top baseplates. It'd make it a much more stable and precise machine. Live and learn, I suppose.

Thinking about a double C-frame that is powered by the same power pack on the triple press. :)
