Inexcusable carelessness with sharp things:a cautionary tale

I saw the micro surgeon today. The tendon is 60% severed so repair is a must. The good part is he's convinced that the insurance company has no choice but to allow the referral;he considers the surgery an emergency.

I go back Wednesday to get it done. Right now the thumb is in a funky looking splint made out of(get this) Kydex! Ironic, huh?

Good luck with the surgery & hope you are well again soon...save the kydex, might make a nice sheath for somethin' later on.

Stil?

Glad you saw the surgeon so quickly. VERY glad you have insurance. Glad you have a reparable injury.

Does the Dr. have a camera?

Stil,

Listen to your doctor. Listen to your doctor. Listen to your doctor. Listen to your doctor. I cannot stress this enough. I "knew" it all, felt better, and popped my tendon. Big ol waste of 3000 smackers for a crooked pinkie finger. Take it easy. Do the physical theropy afterwards. Oh, and listen to your doctor;)

Best of luck to ya buddy. Smoke will be going up for you on this one. It's no fun. Isn't funny how darn much a tendon cut hurts?? Who would have thunk it? My most painful cut in all my life (and I have cut myself badly several times) was a 1/4" gash on my little finger.

Jake

Thanks for all the good wishes!

Steely Gunz:OK,I must admit something. When I was talking to the surgeon today,One thing repeatedly crossed my mind:"Aww....I don't need to go through all this. It's just a little tendon, should heal in no time."

Message received buddy!

Jake's talking truth. I had a finger stitched up one time to the point it looked like something out of Frankenstein. Two days after the stitches came out I figured (incorrectly) that I was good to go. Dove into a friend's swimming pool and the dayumed thing burst open producing a cloud of blood in the water that had the ladies present feeling a bit faint. Definitely do listen your doctor Stil, and as much as you might want to, don't push it.

Dang man, that sucks. Hopin' ya' make a rapid and complete recovery!

I wouldn't feel too humiliated about it. I'm actually a bit nervous right now, cause I haven't done anything dumb with a blade in a year and a half or so. That typically means that I've got a reeeeaaaal doozie comin' just about any time. I did miss a board with a sledge hammer and smacked my knee instead, man howdy that was some intense pain! Maybe that was enough to stave off my ritualistic cranially inverted bloodletting ceremony for awhile longer...

a few years back my wife noticed how incredibly quickly I recover from cuts and punctures. Since then she swears to everybody that my body's adapted to being piloted by a retarded mind that can't leave sharp things alone.:D

Talk about stupid thing....whoa boy....

how 'bout a guy at 3 AM who feels his Emerson P-Sark wasn't that pointy, and sat there poking at his thigh half a dozen times until the point did penetrate...once that joker went in, it didn't slow down!

ooh!! or the time I tried to close a Sebenza without looking at what I was doing.....instead of closing it towards the opening in the handle I tried to close it against the blade stop. score: Sebenza- 1, Mikey-0

Then there was the time I was playing with a BM 42 and dropped it right into my thigh, that was a real messy one.

I'd have paid off a couple of doctors homes by now if it weren't for duct tape, Superglue and Popsicle sticks. (I'm not as smart as you are, going to see Docs and all)

See, there's folks that do ALOT dumber things....do ya' feel better now?

You...chose..your screen name well.

How many stitches? Cutting the tenon sucks. They're going to make you keep that thing in a brace fore-damn-ever. Do you work with your hands? Send pics of the knife with the pics of the slice.

Its certainly true that the cuts hurt later than sooner. Wait till that scar sets in good and then you go hunting and get cold. My scars on my hands hurt bad in the cold, or if I grip a certain way. Pain takes time to get really revved up I guess. My daughter likes the scars though! I gotta get more tatoos so my grandkids got plenty to ask me about. They hurt less than scars.
