Inexpensive 4x4 with a back seat?

One thing that I can tell you about the Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee is that they use a chain drive in their transfer case which isn't very reliable for anything more than driving in snow.

That's a pretty bold statement considering that the Humvee A1 and later variants use a NP242 (also known as NV) which was installed in Cherokees. Both it and the NP231 also found in Cherokees are considered by most people to be an excellent TC.
 
If you're not going to do much serious off roading, why not look at the Subaru lineup? Very breliable, and hard to beat for fuel economy.
 
The 22re is considered one of the best bulletproof engine's they made right?
