Inexpensive camp knife?

Clint Simpson, it is not that easy to "beat" the system. Paper work needs to be filed showing proof of cost/ value of item being claimed. A sales receipt, a retail catalog that reflects items current price and notarized signed sworn letter(s) from claimant and receiving end or individuals/ retailer that will vouch for provided info. Additionally, if your lost knife for example cost $50 3 years ago. But its price has increased thru the years and now costs $75. Guess what? The P.O. will only reimburse its original cost from 3 years ago to you. If there by chance the inspectors of claims dept., located down in St. Louis, can find fault in your claim, well don' t get caught...

I never knew that. Of course, I never spent much thought on it (brain must be low on Oxygen). The friendly ladies at the counter have always told me to insure the package "for what it is worth to you." Hmmm, looks like I have assumed that worth to be replacement value. It's like our friend says about the first three letters of "assume."

Again, I am not saying anyone should beat the system and I dislike people (general and specific) abusing the system. Many people find comfort in rules and when the rules are “bent,” broken or ignored, these people MAKE MORE RULES. In the case of airlines it is a bad thing (much effort, little effect), but for most people it is a way of protecting themselves and so is a GOOD thing. That is the Practical reason. The Ethical reason, and the real reason I dislike it, being it is not fair and not honorable.

OK, that one flew right over my head.
In hindsight, maybe my example was too mercenary. I would [never] cheat anyone to finance my hobby. When I was stationed in Florida, I bought a used TV for $200. When I moved to Cali, I had it shipped; insured for $200. Afterward, I learned I should have insured it for $300, the replacement cost, new. Mute point, it got here fine.

So to relate this post to topic, things don’t get lost in the mail, so your knife is safe! (And No, you can‘t get rich on the Post Office)

(BTW Maury, where does someone go camping where one can get mail?!)

Hoo-Boy! Asked about a camp knife and now we got criminal conspiracy to defraud the postal system and a political debate on the side - good thing I didn't ask about anything serious......

Think I will pass on camping trip this year and stay home and try to get a really sharp edge on my SAK.......

Actually suggestions are much appreciated - most of 'em anyway. Will probably mail my SAK (insured for current replacement cost!) and go shopping for camp knife when I get there. Hey, a chance to buy a new blade! And at end of trip I can always leave it with my buddy to keep for me for next year.

I wouldn't worry about taking it with me. Just buy one when you get there and if you want to keep it, ship it home. Army surplus has machete's for about 5 or 6 dollars and with a canvas sheath. At least that is what it cost about 10 years ago.
A trip to the hardware store will yeild a butcher knife, duct tape, and some cardboard for a sheath. For what it cost to ship one there, you could almost buy one there and throw it away or give it to another camper.
Any one can buy a kitchen knife about anywhere.
Leave the good stuff home and enjoy your trip.

Bladeforums: its's not much but it's home. Please don't defraud the postal system, those guys have been nice to me... until now.

Don't worry, I'll shut up soon. Good luck on your trip. The knife shopping should make it twice as fun.
