Inexpensive gift knives

yea but you must admit.... who really wants a swiss army knife...
They are humble and certainly lack cool-factor, but they are extremely handy, and I find myself digging my deluxe Tinker out of my knife box all the time.

The Victorinox Huntsman, which is a great model, can be had for $20 if you look. SAKs are good for everyone (I gave my 72 year old mother an Explorer for Christmas and she's using it).

The Glock 78 field knife, which is a good general-purpose knife (even opens bottle caps), can be had for less than $25. Great knife for the vehicle, and boys love 'em.

The Kershaw Chill, which is a sweet little folder (flipper-type), can be had at Cabela's online for $12.99 (serrated version)--get 'em while you can (I bought twelve)!

Its hard to beat the utility of a swiss army knife, and the appeal is incredibly broad. Extra points to the keychain friendly ones for those who don't appreciate the need to carry a knife. I've seen the small Victorinox knives like the Classic turn more people onto carrying than anything else.

I am pretty blessed to have some very nice knives to choose from for carry. Every couple of weeks a SAK alox finds it's way in my pocket.

Picked up a few of these at a Tuesday Morning shop in my neighborhood a few years ago at 13 apiece.

no gift like a swiss army knife...... everybody loves them and almost everybody has 1 in their pocket as a backup to their main edc blade

Vics are an obvious choice, and Kershaw has a lot of good offerings in this price range. A while back I bought eight or nine Kershaw folders just to give people as gifts for birthdays, graduations, Christmas, or whatever. The recipients have always seemed quite pleased with their new knives.

I have an old Alox Solo that kicks my Sebenza out of my pocket from time to time.

Rough Riders, Moras, Old Hickory all make great useable gifts and won't break the bank also if you wan't to spend a bit more to the upper part of your price range you could get a CRKT Drifter or just about anything from Spyderco's Byrd brand and like others have stated just about everbody likes or could use an SAK.

If you are giving the knife to someone that isn't that into knives (because not everyone out there takes pleasure in reading / posting on knife forums on a Friday night....) then I would suggest a one of the many Swiss Army knives as others on hear have mentioned

If you want to give someone an actual EDC knife or if the person enjoy knives a little more, then here are some suggestions (good value for the money in my opinion):

1. Buck Vantage (comes large or small version). Here is a link to the slightly larger version

2. SOG Sogzilla (great thin profile / light knife that has a nice pocket clip that rides deep. You won't even know you are carrying this little knife and for the price won't mind tearing it up a little.

3. Buck Metro This is an awesome key chain knife / bottle opener. I have one of these and it can take a real beating. It comes in many colors (for men or women) http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/BU759BK/buck-black-metro-knife-1-1-8-inch-blade

4. Buck Stockman This is a good old school (Old Timer) pocket knife with 3 blades.

5. Boker Magnum Duke Damascus Blade In my opinion, this is one of the nicest looking gentleman's pocket knife for under $27. It is small, unintimidating and very attractive. It is the kind of knife you slip into your suite pocket when at a classy work function, etc. Hard to beat the look for the price.

6. Boker Plus Subcome If someone likes knives, they will like this little knife. it could go on a key chain or in your pocket daily. It is a small / big knife. It is very light, small, compact, easy to hold and has a great little blade. I challenge you to find a knife this small that still feels this big in your hand.

7. Leatherman Squirt Great little key chain multi-tool....

8. I've seen people mention the Ka-Bar Dozer (great little knife for the money). Also, check out the KA-BAR MULE. It is, in my opinion, the heavy duty folding work knife that size. If someone that camps or wants a heavy duty folding work knife as a back up to their fixed blade, check this knife out.... great gift for that purpose.

Also, check out Columbia River (CRKT) on one of the knife sites such as knifecenter.com As a brand, Columbia River offers an insane amount of knives and keychain tools for under $30

NOTE: I've only suggested knives above that I personally own, so I am at least giving you suggestions from personal experience as well.

Personally, I like to use the Rat-1 to fill the "gift" role. It's just a great little folder for the money and everybody I've given one too really appreciates it and I usually see it clipped in their pocket everytime I see them. Lot's of good choices here though.

Hmm, quite obvious troll is obvious. If you don't want your SAKs I'll pm you my adress ;-).
They are great for utility, have a rich history, stand for quality and the cadet mentioned in the post you answered to doesn't remind people of more "dull" looking red plastic SAKs afaik. When I use my cadet in front of people they're usually very interested and they like the looks of it. When I say it's a 'normal' sak they always go: really?

Traditionals - Case Sodbuster, Case Peanut yellow delrin, Buck 301/303, Buck 110 ($33), SAK

Modern - Kershaw Leek, Buck Vantage Select, Kabar Dozier

I've given quite a few Ontario Rat 1's and Victorinox SAK's as gifts. I've keep quite a few of these for myself also.

My favorite "cheap" knife is a Victorinox Bantam Alox. Only about $20.00 but looks very nice and classy. I have one in Silver Alox that really looks good. It is bigger than the swiss army keychain knives, so the blade is actually quite usefull, but it is very flat and light. I also like the little combo tool with the bottle opener\screwdriver. Amazingly handy to have a little bottle opener if you are in a group of people after work drinking beer but nobody has an opener!
