inexpensive neck knife

CRKT's Folts Minimalist is sub $20 US, and a nice design, with a very secure sheath. Caveat: At that price, even though you get micarta handles, it's a low-end steel. Fine for light use, though.

Have you checked out a Buck Smidgen. Its pretty nice and cheep.

from what I've seen of it, the smidegen and it's brother the hartshook are closer to keychain knife size, and so a bit small for what I want. same with the CRKT RSK mk5.

this summer, I am taking part in an expedition with the scouts, out to peru, spesifically the cuzco area, in the andes.
when I go out there I'd like to have a small fixed blade, ideally a neck knife, for general utility tasks, basically backing up some kind of swiss army knife or smaller multi tool. a neck knife looks to be just the ticket.

my default choice, as with manny around here, would be the ESEE Izula. however when it comes to purchasing the knife money may be somewhat tight, and I may have to go for something a little cheaper (probably not, but I'm figuring it pays to plan ahead)

I have looked around and found numerous alternatives, some of which may or may not be suitable. these are the ones I've seen, in order of increasing price, and the thoughts that hit me when I looked at them:
1) cold steel bird and trout - £19. blade could be a little short, and the handle looks very thin for anything other than slicing, but very cheap.
2) CRKT kerin dogfish - £21. the only thing that really worries me about this knife is reports of the sheath not being brilliantly secure.
3) cold steel spike series - £29. look like thier designed more as weapons than tools, but the low profile and simplicty of the design seems attractive.
4) cold steel K4 neck knife - £29. this looks to be a winner, but again, cold steel specialise in weapons, so will it do the job well?
5) boker plus edit - £39.
6) K-bar Becker necker - £41. overall a good reputation, but something bothers me about the way the sheath seems to be shaped for a different knife. is it secure?
7) boker plus subcom fixed - £42.

my big question is, what are your thoughts on these knives? are they suited to general outdoors use? what are their sheaths like? and which, assuming you couldn't afford the izula, would be your first and second choices?

But if you want cheap why not a Magnum Neck Flash

can't find any of these three in the UK (which supprises me, since boker is based in germany, and perrin is a frenchman)

this looks like it could be a good option though. my only thought is how well you can support the back with your finger. how steep and sharp is the swedge?

As demonstrated by my dog Mocha, any small folder with a secure sheath can become a neck knife with the addition of some para chord..

I think Heinnie Haynes will offer the Grashopper shortly ;)
There are always some German online stores with free shipping to the UK

A small loop on either of the Buck Paclite would lend them very well to neck carry. A lot of knife for the money, I did a lot of checking around before I bought them. 50+ years of using Buck products didn't hurt either.:D. All of my oldest knives are Buck.

if heinnie offer the grasshopper, it will certainly enter into the equation, dependent on price. if I can buy from heinnie, I will, their service has been top notch, and excellent turn around times

unfortuenately my german is somewhat lacking, so purchasing from germany could be interesting. far as I can tell, import duties wouldn't apply though (but they would from the US)

I also see that condor are coming out with a few neck knife designs, at reasonable prices. those could also need to be considered.

currently, it's looking like this order of precedence
1) the izula. allways was my first choice, if I had the cash
2) the becker.
3) the buck paklite, assuming I can find a reliable source

the boker grasshopper, condor neck knives and perin bowie are somthing I will have to look into further, and if I can find a suitable source, could enter into the scheme of things.

the woods walker is definately out, far as I can tell there is no easy way of finding out wheather I would be charged import tax or not, nor how much it would be. finding out would be a right headache (you would need to phone, and by all acounts they are not too helpful) which is a shame, it looks like a pretty nice little bit of kit.

I too would like a neck knife for EDC and last ditch SD. however most of the neckers I've checked out are like only .06" thick. too thin for last ditch SD IMHO. any ideas guys? I'm new here by the way so please take it easy on me.
