Inexpensive tarp to "try" tarp camping

Actually Tyvek house wrap makes an excellent lightweight shelter or ground cloth and is hugely popular.

I'd go for it over plastic

I am with you HD. Two things I noticed that may help if someone wants to go the Tyvek route. Cut it with scissors to prevent the edges from fraying. ANd the stuff I got came in a 9' length which worked out well as I folded over two feet and duct taped it to make a pocket at the end. I stick my feet in the pocket if it is raining and/or cold to keep the end of my sleeping dry and warm which is usually the first thing to get cold and wet.

Lots of great responses and ideas!!! Thanks all!!! Now I just need to get something and try....once I find time. Too much working. :barf:

That pocket thing sounds like an excellent idea.

I started off with just a simple army surplus camo tarp. Durable silicon covered nylon. Not the lightest but is a good taste of the tarp world.

You should also note what you are using the tarp for.
