INFI blades!

Yup. If he patented it, anybody could find out what the secrets are, and then the patent would eventually expire and anybody could duplicate it if they wanted to. But that won't happen as long as it remains secret.

clever sausage, isn't he ??

Transverse wave tempering:thumbup:

What is this supposed to mean? Seriously?

A heating element produce infrared waves, wich are transverse waves.

It's like saying that the secret ingredient of your drink is ethylic alcohol.

Heat treating is one of the reasons I'll never sell my Cabelas Buck Mini-Alpha limited in s30V.
Heat treated by Paul Bos! #196 :)

Guyon, it was intended as a question and not as a correction: I was just curious if Camillus actually had that kind of capability. Are there ANY production knife makers that actually turn out their own alloys in plants they own/control?

While I'm asking questions, here's another one. Was it well known that Camillus made the Carbon V knives for Cold Steel at the time they were being sold, or is that something that was learned only after Camillus folded? I didn't really follow CS, so it's all news to me.

elkins45, I remembered that Phil Gibbs post from a ways back, and it stuck in my head that Camillus was making the steel for Cold Steel. However, when you raised your question, I realized that both parties might likely be getting the steel from elsewhere and having it heat treated at Camillus. I honestly don't know though.

For both questions, Phil Gibbs is the man to ask as he was at Ground Zero for all of this, and he still posts here with frequency. I'll try and see if we can get an answer out of him.

Thanks for waking me from my Hibernation Guyon! :p

Getting a special run of steel made your way is surprisingly easy, only paying for it is hard!!
It is just a question of volume. You must buy a whole "Heat" of the steel.
In the case of Camillus & Cold Steel, we had to buy 400,000 lbs.
I know there are some specialty houses that will run much smaller batches of steel, at a much higher price per pound.

It never ceases to amuse me how all this proprietary steel/heat treatment discussion seems to polarize us.
Several people are convinced I am lying/wrong/stupid when I state that Carbon V/0170-6C was a proprietary steel & not 1095CV.

No matter!
As stated by many here, Heat Treatments are what really matter!
Part Chemistry, part science & a whole lotta Magic when it is all done right!!!
