The grain in the steel is really prominent in this HOGB8 of mine. Took a little video of it to show the way it follows the sweep of the blade. Interesting it does that. Anyone know why?

It is pretty cool how it follows the sweep of the blade. My buddy has a regular Basic 8 that shows it really well.

Hmmm. Yep, same thing on both my satin HOGB8 and B8LE's. Good eye, Rob! Would love to see Jerry's explanation of what's going on there!

I have/have had some older satin knives that display this...when this happens, the satin is taken to another level in my opinion.

Particularly one FSH Variant CS and a CS SOW - the satin on those was something to behold because of that grain structure. THe only way I could describe it in sales thread was something to the effect of..."something really special about this satin finish, hard to explain".

Also the CABS LE models seem to display this as well. I have had a few, sold a few, have 2 and they all had this effect.

Watching the video, that looks to be a more defined grain structure than even what I have observed.

All the B8 LE's I've seen display this too. Almost has a look like a bunch of fine little surface cracks, but under magnification, they're definitely not cracks. My B4, Hog Muk, and NMFBM also show it really well. I think it's some sort of way the steel reacts to the final satin application process. I saw it happen to a limited extent when I stripped and satin-ized my BT6, so I think it's the Scotchbrite belts that cause it. Just a guess, but I have no idea why it happens.

It looks like marks from when the blade was sanded.

Except the marks are nearly perpendicular to the grind lines...

We know what the grain is. Jerry has commented before that it’s the result of the milling process when the steel is rolled out. What that explanation (see below) does not address is why the directional elongation seems to bend with the sweep of the edge, almost parallel to it.

What you're seeing is the grain stucture of the steel. . . .They all have it. You have to hold it at the right angle to see but they are there...

They are created when the steel is rolled lengthwise at the mill. . .. and just like wood, the direction of the grain adds to the lateral strength. . . .

Think of them as nuclear rebar reinforcing the blade. . .

Let's Drink!

That's exactly the thread I was thinking of when I posted this. It would be interesting to know why it follows the sweep of the blade though. I wonder if it has something to do with the way it's cooked?

It's probably the way the Unicorn tears flowed during the quench cycle. ;)

Ya all mine have had that strange grain ripple thing going on that you can only see when the reflection is just right. Interesting you can see it through all the sanding down to the satin finish. But cool unique characteristic

I think this is quickly turning to a "I obsessively study an fondle my busse blades" confession thread..

Bugger you Rob !!! I read the thread title and figured this was a new super breakfast cereal!!! Like Nutri-Grain but much much better !!!!

I’m hungry now..

Confession? I thought that was why we were all here in the first place...
Well it starts like so: "I really need a good blade I can depend on and hey.. ya get what ya pay for"
Next blade its: "babe I know, but this really doesnt chop that well like that battle mistress.."
Third blade: "oh my god... babe look at this new blade release...oh man....... look babe I know..but I'll sell my guitar. last one babe I promise"
Blade 4 : "oh wow!!..crap.... ugggh, well it's better to ask forgiveness than permission"
Immediately followed by: "ok maybe it wasnt better.. oh well she'll get over it...ughh these couch pillows suck..shoulda brought my pillow.."
Blade #5 or 6: " babe you should get your own Busse, it would be so sexy..a girl with a Busse..damn"
At this point all attempts to justify blades by way of "need" are ineffective...dont try it.
Blades 7 -10: "you gotta see how much these gain in value...that blade you got is going for $900 now babe"
the cold shoulder is short lived an she doesnt seem that bad...a small sting of excitement passes through you.
Blades 11+: "what 1$ charge?.. what?...you know I love these things..."
That's when your at the point you line your blades up to stare at as you play your guitar....that you didnt sell
