INFI in the Woods - An East Coast Camping Trip

Hiking? Or camping? There is a place in GW Nat'l Forest, south of Skyline Drive, that is free for primitive camping. The hiking is along the AT, though. My family and I have been there often, car camping at Crabtree Meadows, and doing day hikes on the AT. It is just north of ... um... Spyglass(?) or Looking Glass Rock. I think it is Spyglass Rock. But it isn't someplace you can just go for a day. You have to drive up into the forest up a forest road, and it is about a half hour just on that forest road. Also, have you ever been to the Priest? That is just outside Culpeper. It's a good place to go for just a day. I've never tried overnight, although I've hiked it pretty late at night. Just can't camp on the mountain.

Mainly hiking, I grew up in this area but lived In the Midwest for the last 20+ yrs, like a brand new place for me for the most part. Really just a simple place no need for overnight just yet, that'll be next year. Some place that wont absorb a full tank of gas but is beautiful and me and the dogs can both enjoy.

How's that move working out for ya nframe? Hope things are well man...I know it can be tough.
Thanks for the concern brother, its been tough but I'm getting better daily, got a solid lead on a job, dogs are adapting well, loving being back home. Still miss her even though she crushed me, going out with my nephew tonight looking forward to that. Even had a lead on a new woman as well. Things are looking up.

That's great buddy, I'm glad to hear it. Just remember, head up, shoulders back, and know that they want you, don't say it, but know.... They will come, oh yes my friend, they will come.

I'm still down for this trip. I've been working a lot.

Any of NoVa guys suggest some good free hiking close to Winchester? Little off topic sorry but I figure since this was a Va. thread it'd be a good place to ask. Walking my dogs at the park is getting the job done but I'd prefer a little less of a crowd. Would like a scenic place for me to escape to as well, my folks are driving me nuts!

Hey NFrame, sky meadow state park isn't too far from winchester. I have been there a few times and brought my dog last spring. As for the va camping trip, this sounds like a blast. I am new around the Busse forums and would love to get involved more but will be busy clear through dec it seems. I am looking forward to the pictures though!

Great. What time do you plan to arrive?

If it's just going to be a few people I may opt to work this weekend. I've got a house that I have to give back to a family by the day before thanksgiving. I wasn't sure about it being possible but if I work I can get it done in plenty of time.

I'm not out totally just curious who is coming now. Seems like just me and zombie hunter

Yeah that makes sense. Unfortunately, interest has waned as the trip has gotten closer and that would be a long trip for you to make for just the two of us INFI addicts. It is close to Thanksgiving though and I certainly understand that people have family and work obligations. It would be fun to get a big group of people to go, so perhaps I will try to plan a spring camping trip instead.

Yea....I'm down after the first of the year. Wish I could have worked it out this weekend. Lets all take a rain - check on this and do a winter camping trip.

If people are interested in a winter camping trip I'd be up for it, but it does get quite cold and windy up in the mountains where my land is. More people would probably be interested if we waited until springtime.

Ok....either way...I'm not going anywhere so I'm up for it. Sure wish I was single...I'd be there this weekend.

Check out Old Rag, though it's a couple hours from Winchester. South on I-81 then West near Woodstock and a bit into the GWNF is a place called Little Stony Creek...long, steep, beautiful hikes (Big Schloss and Half-Moon Lookout included). Easiest to rent the cheap Sugar Knob cabin from PATC, however, and stay for a few days.

Just a bit east from Winchester on Rt. 7, at the gap before you get into Loudoun County, there's a nice little hike up to Bear's Den rocks on the South side and a bit longer hike up to Raven Rocks on the North side.

All down the Skyline drive are great hikes as well, but there's a small fee (think $40 for a 1yr pass) and the nature of the road makes getting anywhere take forever.

Old Rag is on my short list as is Bears Den. Just reconnected with an old friend who is into hiking as well, got some time planned early next week. Skyline drive is going to wait until next year though. Thanks!
Actually made a small trek into the GWNF to Elizabeth Furnace yesterday, first time I've seen it in 30 yrs. Amazingly beautiful, so thankful to be here again so I can enjoy the beauty of my home state. Didn't appreciate it as a kid growing up, but after 20 yrs. in south central KS this place is too amazing.

Wish I was out there!

They have had get together here in the North West, but too far from my neck of the woods.

Due to the lack of people able to attend the camping trip this weekend, this trip is officially postponed. Will try again down the road.
