Wow. I never expected this...

I have a Ratmandu in INFI. It's my first INFI blade. I have been in love with it until this evening. I went out to walk in the woods near my house and took it with me. I found a sapling a little more than an inch in diameter that would make a good walking stick. I stripped bark, chopped it to length against another tree and slide-chopped the knots off of it. Nothing out of the ordinary.

When I got home I went to wash it off in the sink and noticed damage. Some of the material was rolled which was enough of a shock. But what really sent me reeling was the missing blade material. Yes, folks, that is missing material from the blade. From making a walking stick. I am so disappointed. From everything I have read I was expecting the blade to be much tougher than this! I hope this is a fluke. I have a TGLB on the way and I hope it can handle more difficult tasks than this!!

It took about an hour with 1800 grit wet/dry sandpaper to get an acceptable edge back on the knife. There is still a tiny spot that I'll probably have to fix with a stone. So. Bummed.

Weird.. You should contact Busse. They will take care of everything.

Get ahold of the company in the morning and they will make it right. If they don't ( they will) then feel free to post that up. I think there's a sticky covering this.....

Weird. Does not look like a factory edge. Have you thinned that out? It looked like a thinned, high polished convex.

I've had fantastic results with INFI being super tough. It will roll when thinned too much.

I have never left a factory edge long on any knife, let alone all the Busse I have owned (with the exception of the CABS and MUCK, and BAD which were great).

Contact the shop, they will take care of you. Don't worry about it. Aslo, the larger fixed blade will have a pretty meaty edge.

I usually thin mine out.

Agreed. Looks like the edge has been convexed and thinned down a bit too much for the task. Any steel will roll and flake off if ground too thin.

Either way, contact Busse tomorrow and they will get you taken care of.

I had to down sample the images to get them to upload so they aren't the best. The blade is convex and I hadn't done anything to it other than strop with a leather belt. So no thinning on my part.

I'm a user, not a collector and I've lost confidence in that knife which pretty much means it will stay in a drawer. I'm very nervous now about using it at all since I am not sure I can count on it in the field. I shouldn't be due to the warranty and customer service Busse Kin provides. I have no doubt that if there is something wrong they will do whatever it takes to rectify the situation. But it takes so long!!!

What I might do is go out and use it in a similar manner and see if I can reproduce the issue. Or I'll contact Busse and send it to them and see if they can.

Hmm. Two comments about it looking thinned. Yikes!

I went and grabbed my Ratmandu CG and compared thickness. Not sure if it is a valid test but they feel about the same. The difference is that the INFI blade is thicker closer to the edge. Just before the edge it does a pretty aggressive convex where the CG version is V angled edge. My understanding is that a convex edge should be a bit stronger than the other.

not a big deal , man , go and make a call to the Company, they will care about you and your knife.

I just sent them an email to start the conversation. I've heard enough good things that I am not worried at all.

Thanks all

Sometimes factory edge can get oveheated during the process of machine sharpening. If it does - it's prone to chipping a bit. First sharpening usually solves this problem. If you already sharpened the knife - go and beat the hell out of it to see how it behaves. If the problem stays - contact Jerry and he'll take care of the problem.

This.
…could be. the factory edges (on any knife) sometimes are softer-after a few sharpening it should toughen up.

Hey Ifellon.....I had a problem with my first BUSSE as you know....felt like you too.....Jerry WILL......I repeat. ....WILL make this right. You have nothing to worry about. My one suggestion is to box it up yourself.....cost me $6.83 to ship my TGLB to them using my own box....they (usps) want too much for their boxes. Don't let this get ya down man. You couldn't be in better hands when it comes to BUSSE warranty.

We take a lot of pride in the work that we do and we become just as upset when a knife leaves the shop that is not up to our standards. Please give us the chance to make things right. I will also make sure it is done in a timely fashion. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. : Please call the shop at (419)923-6471 and we will speak more about it then.

Looks to me like you might have hit a rock there bruddah. I have never heard of INFI (or any other carbon steel for that matter) chipping during woodwork  I have had very similar looking rolls in my edges in the past when accidentally making contact with the occasional rock...

I sent an email to Lexi (wasn't sure who to start with) late last night and I got a response back first thing this morning. So I all is good. I'm going to send it in and let them give it a look. If they can touch the blade up a bit and then put it through some hard use to see what happens...that would be awesome!
