When SpeedTech first released their Synergy folder, the first run of blades were hand ground by Allen Elishewitz. Basically, the Synergy was a unique production folder in that the handle is machined from one solid billet of aluminum as opposed to being assembled in parts like other folder handles. This one piece construction yielded a very strong and solid feeling handle. As Rico pointed out, the locking mechanism was a button lock, and I think automatic versions of the knife were offered (I am not totally clear on this, I know there were plans on releasing autos but not sure if SpeedTech followed through with this or not).
SpeedTech was one of the first - if not THE first - knife company to offer consumers a unique way of purchasing their Synergy. One would log on to the company website to configure the knife - from handle finishes to blade shapes, nearly every aspect of the knife could be selected. SpeedTech did not build any knife to "warehouse", they only built knives when they received orders submitted through the website.
Unfortunately, SpeedTech is no more. I guess you can say it was a fast rise and fall. It was either the '98 or '99 Blade Show in which the company won an award for the Synergy. I believe it was American Made Knife of the Year? (Someone correct me if I am incorrect). A while after that, came SpeedTech's premature demise. I know that ST founder/president Jim O'Young is still very much a knife nut and still reads the forums. I'll see if I can track him down to provide more specific info on the Synergy. Hope this info helps.
