Hi all. I just got ahold of two wheels approx 2"x8". They are old and appear to be for cutting gemstones. One is an aqua blue color and the other is a slightly darker grey blue. Both seem pretty fine, and the piece of cardboard on the aqua colored one had small line pictures of cut stones all the way around it.

Any Ideas what these are? Can I use these for sharpening and putting on a polished edge? Run wet or dry? Just start using them and see?

Thanks in advance for any input.

bad idea to use a grinding wheel for sharpening. i could probably get away with it since i have been sharpening knives for over half my life but it would be just to work up a burr. i use cardboard wheels to sharpen knives and if you want a set you can get a set from stevebot who is a member here on the forum. there are some posts about the cardboard wheels that you can find by doing an advance search. (i dont have the links handy) the aqua blue grinding wheel could possibly be for sharpening carbide cutters but without seeing a picture of the wheel its hard to tell. were there any numbers on the wheels? can you post picks of the wheels?

In a time before I went all diamond on my lapidary wheels, I used to have some just like that.
They are meant to run with a water drip or spray, so they don't load up.
The wheels are started up dry, the water is started, the work is done, the water is turned off, and the wheels run until dry, else the water tend to collect in the bottom side of the wet wheel, and if you turn it on while the one side is still wet, you might got an effect not unlike a fragmentary grenade...
I'd rather use a belt for sharpening any day.

Interesting info. I thank you so much. My plan is to build a grinder w/ the parts I have just gotten. I will use these wheels, and if I can use them for anything, I will keep them, otherwise, just have them for a mock-up.
howiesatwork, these could have been your wheels. They came from nor-Cal. Did you run a groove in the coarser one?:)
Thanks for the suggestions.
