Mr. Oda in his workshop, looks like a typical traditional Japanese swordsmith configuration.

Kuzan designed some Japanese style fixed blades for Pacific Cutlery, back in the day.
That is a cool folder!

Absolutely fantastic piece. I hope to own a tamahagane blade someday.

Have you used it at all?
HEY SORRY, I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM STUFF BUT I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS.
ONE; I HAVE A KOGATANA WHICH NEEDS TO BE REPOLISHED. DAMAGE TO THE BLADE IS NOT DEEP BUT IS BEYOND MY ABILITY. CAN ANYONE SUGGEST A POLISHER? I'm IN COLORADO.
TWO; I HAVE A 1978 MADE MASTER KUZAN ODA SAN BLADE WHICH I BOUGHT NEW IN ABOUT 1980, DOUBLE EDGE, HOLLOW GROUND, BRASS GUARD AND BUTT WITH SOME FANCY SPACERS IN THE HANDLE. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS CALLED A "GLADIATOR" AFTER I BOUGHT IT WHEN I VISITED MASTER ODA HERE IN COLORADO SPRINGS. I'M GETTING OLD, MY KIDS HAVE NO INTEREST IN SUCH THINGS AND I AM WONDERING HOW TO PRICE AND SELL SUCH AN ITEM. ANY IDEAS?

Last week I saw him at Sakura blade show.
He shows disassembling his own fixed blade.

HARUFU-REGISTERED USER-OLD COLLECTOR
In about 1980, I met Oda Sahn here in Colorado Springs, CO, was honored to be invited to his home and met his wife. I purchased a two edged gladiator from a local knife specialty store here in the Springs, which he had consigned. It came with a belt sheath which I assume Oda Sahn made but I am not sure. The blade is marked "JUL 78-Y" on one side and "KUZAN" on the opposite. The markings are done with a vibrating metal marker pencil so this was made before he had any other means of IDing his work. The 6 3/4" blade is double edged and hollow ground up 6 3/8" and polished to a mirror finish all over. The handle is of a darkish wood, two pcs. separated by a brass strip surrounded by black and white spacers, this brass strip etc. repeated below the brass cross guard and also at the brass squared off butt plate. I have never sharpened it but it still has the edge(a hair shaver) it had the day I bought it. Overall length is 11 3/8" and it has been the jewel of my collection for many years. I am now in my 70's and have sold many of my prettys. My children don't care or wouldn't appreciate this piece so if there is any interest in this piece, I can be reached at 719-964-8771 Ask for Paul Harufu

Hi, I'm also a huge fan of him and his works.
He's a licensed sword smith now, producing swords and other cutting tools including differentially heat-treated hunting knives.

Maybe this is the most famous episode of him here in Japan.

Thank you for sharing this amazing video.

Mr Oda lives just up the road from me in downtown East Tokyo. He dined with his daughter in my restaurant this year. At the time I did not know that he is a legend. He talked with me about hunting in Alaska with his wife. He seamed like a very nice old guy. He also said he liked my food :-)

Respect!

Folks, I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to custom knives, but I'm stumped.

Can anyone give me some information on Kuzan Oda. I understand he worked with R.W. Loveless and that is all I know.

Just what I need another maker to collect!!;)

Thanks,
Win
Kuzan worked with loveless when he first came here, basically hiding in the shop as he had no green card,I met him when he worked with yanceyin Estes park, colo. he moved around until finally getting his card and we shared a shop in Lyons,co he then moved to Idaho and on to Alaska before returning to Japan....one of the most skillful people I’ve known...larry pogreba
