Info on Laguiole

Oh I agree, just people should beware, there's a lot of variety in quality behind the name laguiole. Buying french is no guarantee. As the above video points out there is a lot of "myths" surrounding the pattern.
Yes, you are right. There are many poor quality knives from EVERY country. Most of the time, I think, you get what you pay for. I think many quality Laguioles can be found in the $100 to $200 range. If you pay $20 you will get junk-- unless you get lucky at an estate sale or something like that.

OH MY :confused: Why would you be looking to purchase a substandard knock off or are you just getting a feel for the range of options? There are some very good French Laguiole dealers and makers selling fine knives for relatively modest $$s.

Haha...Sorry, clearly I didn't express myself well. I was looking for them only because of the post I quoted. To see where such Laguioles are being made. I found several made in China. But not from any other parts of Asia, none from Taiwan and certainly not any from Japan where original (French) Laguoiles are prized. While I wouldn't be surprised if there were Pakistani made ones at all, I haven't found those either. I was not looking to buy one. lol

If I wanted to own a Laguiole, I would only buy one made in France. And as a rule I don't buy any knife made in China. Unless it were an authentic Caidao or something. Perhaps the poster incorrectly used "Asian" instead of "Chinese"?

A real Laguiole is made in France only. You should not settle for one made anywhere else.

While I personally would only buy a Laguoile made in France, the idea raises the validity of the following statements;
A real Bowie is made in the United States only.
A real Tanto is made in Japan only.
A real Stiletto is made in Italy only.
Etc etc....
...just food for thought...:)

Yes. And I would want my Bowie made in the US (preferably Texas, where Bowie died--and my home state!); I would like a tanto from Japan, and a stiletto from Italy. Swiss Army Knife from Switzerland, Puuko from Finland, etc. I think a Barlow would be best from either England, where they originated, or the US, where it has been made for so long. I think Germany has some good Barlows that I would not reject. :)

The knife cleaned up nicely:

it fares better with baguette & cheese :-)
quoted text from a laguiole site regarding carbon blade care....
"..(in the old days the peasants did not wash their knife blade but wiped it on their work trousers)....you can dip a cork in cold wood ashes and wipe the blade .." :-)
