info on moore maker knives

Here's one of the 3300's that Aaron mentioned. All in all, not a bad little knife. If you're patient, it shouldn't be too difficult to acquire one as they come up for sale now and again. While I haven't checked out one of the Utica-produced models yet, I am anxious to pick up a shadow pattern stockman. The Queen made models are very nice and, as others have warned, stay far away from the Bear produced models.

That's disappointing.

Don't be disappointed, that's pretty much how the cutlery business has always been. Heck, even some knife manufacturers have had certain models produced under contract by other knife companies.;)

Maddogg......

No worries TEXAS still has enough other Big Stuff

Darn straight!:D

I still regret not picking up a Camillus-made buffalo horn handled stockman when they were easily found.

What I certainly do not regret is getting the Queen-made 5301. Very good fit and finish, significantly better than any recent Case I have seen, and better than Queen's own brand knives, I really like this one.

I too carry a Moore Maker stockman knife on a regular basis. I have three, all made by Queen. All have excellent fit and finish. I prefer the larger models like the 5301 shown below in honey bone (3 7/8"), the model 5302 in a burnt orange bone (4 1/4"), and the 6302 with stag scales.

The top views are photos taken shortly after purchase, the bottom photo shows about 8 years of carry wear.

Its interesting to note the different jigging pattern Queen used on Lambertiana's model 5301, and the jigging patterns used on my two bone knives.

Lambertiana, do you know the year yours was built? My 5302 and 6302 are dated 2000, and the 5301 is dated 2003.

Just to reinforce what has been said, the Queen & Camillus made knives that I have (several) are very good. I would give them a slight edge over Case. Regarding their lower end I can't comment on Utica quality but Bear does not have a good reputation.

A bit of a resurrection, but...

I just picked up a Moore Maker 5201 Trapper. Blade is marked 1995, so it's supposed to be a second year production. Can anyone tell me who made this knife. I found it new in box in a pawn shop for $70. I hope that was a good deal. It's very nice.

I have a 5503, which is made by Queen, older ones were made by Camillus, if there is a B after the number it's made by Bear&Sons, a U made by Utica, and some are made by Boker, and some Canal Street. Moore Maker does not make knives they contract them out can be confusing. This really did not answer your question, sorry.

No letter after the number. Just 5201. And 1995. It's a smooth, yellow bone, 3 7/8 inch Trapper.

I learned about the Bear made MM's the hard way.
Bought a small trapper with yellow bone scales. I liked the size and finish just fine untill I used it and discovered that the blade will close up on ya under even the lightest duty.
The fact that they would put their name on that POS soured me on MM permently.
If I want a Queen or CSC knife, I'll give my money directly to them.

If you can provide a picture, that would help in identifying it. The Queen made ones don't seem to differ from their own knives, at least when it comes to the blades.

I have some really poor quality cellphone pictures if this helps. I was really excited about this knife due to it's size and shape. It was exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, I can't get it to take an edge to save my life. Don't know what the problem is. I'm using a Lansky. All my Case knives are scary, past razor level, sharp. This knife eludes me, so instead of my new edc, it will be sold at the next knife show.

I would say if it has the bone handle it was made by Queen. The ones with the delrin handles were made by Camillus back then.

This is my impression also. Camillus made most/all of the 'economy' line (i.e., synthetic handles), and the 'fancier' knives with bone/stag/other natural materials were done by Queen (for the most part). If this knife is bone-scaled, I'd bet it's Queen-produced.

That trapper is a Queen brasso. You got a deal, thats a $95 dollar knife.
I have a 5300 that is probably the best f/f production knife I own. zero blade plat and no gaps. Blades line up with the backsprings when open. I was just at the website and it looks like they still have Queens. I agree with Lambertiana. The Mooremaker Queens are a better knife than their own brand.
I also have two "economy" line Camillus knives. A stockman and a muskrat. They are well made knives with no blade play and smooth action. The Camillus stockman has the double liner where the Queen has blades with more krink to fit them in. The trappers a keeper, keep the trapper.(haiku)

Thank you guys for the info. I love the knife, but it won't sharpen. I don't understand it. I've managed to get all my other knives like razors. I can't do anything with this one. Maybe someone else will have better luck.
