I am going to be making my first knife over April, hopefully not May, I just wanted to run over the pros.
I am going to be making it out of A2 from http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050R9P2W/ref=biss_dp_t_asn through stock removal with a hand mirror polish or stonewash or maybe I'll be lazy and send it out for a duracoat.
For handles, I am thinking Oak with a glow in the dark epoxy liner, connected with blackened brass pins.
For the sheath, I am thinking a leather kydex lined sheath.
Does this sound OK?
The heat treating is going to be done by Paul Bos at Buck Knives, does anyone have any info on the service? or experience?(I will be calling them for most of the info)
What Rockwell hardness do you think I should request?
Does Paul Bos heat treat this steel? Does anyone have any ideas for getting a good grind? Also unhardened steel be easy to work with right?(with a file)

A2 is a great tool steel; it is my go to for non-stainless knives.
The handle is up to your personal preference; make sure the wood is stabilized.
Why are you going to line the kydex?
Hardness is a use and personal preference issue. Is it a chopper, a hunting knife, EDC knife?
I believe Bos heat treat does any air hardening steel.
Yes unhardened/annealed steel is your best bet for working with a file.

OK A2 sounds good.
I am not lining the kydex, it is going to be a kydex sheath with a leather outside.
And it is going to be a hunting / EDC knife.
I am looking into stabilizing the wood.

I got a batch of blades back from Paul Bos in January (It totally makes sense to send them a batch as the minimum charge is 80-something dollars and that is up to 20 knives) and they came back properly heat treated and straight can't ask for more than that.

PS before you order your steel from someone off Amazon, email Aldo aldo@njsteelbaron.com and ask him if he has what you need. He always has A2 when I see him even though it is not shown on his website, and he might be able to hook you up for a better price. Aldo is a great guy and he is one of us not some big company. He is a knifemaker who started selling steel because nobody was taking care of the knifemakers

I get all my A2 from Aldo. So far his prices can't be beat even without free shipping!
