Found a little info doing a search here, but would like to get some more opinions. I would like to try out D2, and I like the low ride pocket clip on the Little Encounter. But how is the lock? Is it solid like an Al Mar SERE? Is it wimpy so that this knife would be restricted to light duty "gentleman" use? Which handle is preferable - micarta or micarta with steel? Thanks for any additional opinions.

I have both a SERE 2000 and a little Encounter with micarta scales.

The Lum weighs half of what the SERE does, so it's an unfair comparison just on mass of materials. Not many knives compare with the SERE.

The liner lock on the SERE is 1.5 mm, 1.0 mm on the Lum. Does the Lum sound like a bank vault closing like the SERE? NO.

Does the Lum lock up tight? Yes.

Is the Lum a light duty knife? NO.

Is the Lum as HD as the SERE? NO.

The SERE carries tip up, Lum tip down if that matters to you.

Fit and Finish on the Lum? A-1

D2? SHARP!

Handle material? I'd rank the aluminum scales and the stainless/micarta scales ahead of the all micarta for strength. Micarta weak? No just not as strong.

I paid $80.00 for my Lum and would rank it as an excellent value. YMMV:)

Thanks dullone. How is sharpening the D2? Do you use a sharpmaker? How would you rank the aluminum scales vs. micarta/steel scales?

The Lum Encounter is a nice knife but not near as heavy duty as the Sere 2000. I had the large version of the Encounter with the micarta scales and the 4" blade. The blade was very sharp right out of the box and it rode pretty low in the pocket. The liner lock on the Encounter is pretty thin compaired to the Sere 2000 but it didn't seem to have any less tight a lockup. If you are looking for a real user I would go with the Sere 2000, most people you will talk to on the forum rate this knife pretty high. Hope this helps.
