Anyone here ever heard of troostite? It was referenced in David Boye's book, but I havent been able to find it anywhere else.

Yea, my version of the book was copyrighted in the late 70's, so that was my intial thought, but I couldnt find any reference to it in any of my books or the metals handbook. Now I know for sure.

The terms troostite and sorbite are obsolete . We have at this point pearlite, upper bainite, lower bainite and martensite. In the late '60s electron microscopes became available giving us 100,000x magnification rather than the optical microscope's 1,000x .That gave us a much better idea of structures. Today we have as high a 1,000,000x .It's amasing what we can see today !!

Yes troosite is not used any more, except by old fogies like me. It is the mixture of fine pearlite and tempered martensite that makes up the hamon on a clay quenched blade.
