These stones came into my possession recently. The previous owner obviously took good care of them. I am not familiar with stones and am interested in what they are made of. Numbers 1-2-3-4 are dual sided one being coarser than the other. If you are familiar with stones and would be willing to share your expertise it would be appreciated.

Fred

I have number 2. The Norton silicon carbide. Opted for that over the more widely known aluminum oxide (india). Its a really great, fast cutting stone. Cant help with the rest. Sorry

1 and 2 look like silicon carbide stones. If they aren't combination, could be Medium or coarse.

3 looks like a silicon carbide or maybe AlumOx stone.

4 looks like an inexpensive AlumOx combination stone.

5 looks to be Hard Arkansas.

6 looks like a Barber's hone.

Nice collection!

The stone numbered as '2' is actually labelled on the side (upside down in the pic, but I think I'm reading it correctly), as a 'Crystolon Combination Oilstone'; that would be SiC (silicon carbide, by Norton) abrasive, and should be a good one.

The other large, dark stone (#1) could also be SiC, I think.

Also, as Martin mentioned, the #5 stone looks like a hard Arkansas (translucent, I assume).

Looks like a nice set of stones (a little bit envious here...).

#4 looks similar to my Norton combo stone that has medium Crystolon on one side and fine India on the other. Mine is a different color (more orange) on the India side, but the gray side looks VERY similar. <shrug>

I think you need a lot of knives for that many stones. If you don't already have them you'll just have to go get some. I know it's a pain, but it must be done. Come back with a shot of the blades with the stones. Yard sales are your friends.

I appreciate your input. I've always used diamond plates or 2x72 belt machines; looking forward to working with these stones. I'm sure they will tell me what they are and what their use is as I work with them.

Regards, Fred
