Years ago when my grandfather passed away, I was given a box full of knives that belonged to him. They've basically been sitting in a closet for a long time. I recently decided to start going through them to see what all is actually there. Thought I would share with you guys because I think there are quite a few good ones. Some are in pretty bad shape and some are almost brand new condition. If you find any errors in my research, please let me know! I would really love to nail down some of the actual years that some of these were made, but it looks like that would be a difficult task for some. In addition to all of these in the pictures, I also have about 20-30 others. Most of them are either "Made in China", "Made in Pakistan" or they are gimmick looking knives (store promotional, sports teams, etc.). I'll gladly post pictures of those too if anyone would like.

Sorry if there are too many pictures!

I really want to clean them all up as best I can. Any tips on that?

Here's a picture of the ones I think are the better ones and the ones that I've researched to find out what they are:

So I'm using Flickr. I copied the link to each picture, then I click the "Insert Image" button in the message and paste the link. What am I doing wrong? Do Flickr links not work?

None of your image links have the proper image extension like JPG, etc.

Try UNCHECKING the box that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally"

Here, I'm going to try it.

So that doesn't work apparently. That has always worked for me but I use Photobucket, not flickr. Edit: I use direct links, which include the .jpg file ending.

RamZar is correct.

Wow. Very cool collection.

I'm more into modern style folders at the moment. But I feel like I'll eventually get sick of all these titanium frame locks, G10 scales, high tech steels, etc and naturally start collecting the classics.

Those are some awesome fixed blades, by the way.

I know it was a while ago, but you have my condolences on the loss of your Grandfather....

You have quite the legacy there. If you want to clean them, just remember to go as gentle as you can....

Most of them look like all they really need is a wipe down with some oil....

Did you take this over to the "Traditional" sub-forum? They'd really get a kick out of them and I'm sure there would be other tips as well....

Perhaps make a nice "memory" board or shadow box with pics of grampa and other mementos along with some of the knives....

Regardless, enjoy the plethora of blades you have there and remember him well....

Thanks for the condolences and the ideas!

Can I just move my post to the Traditional sub-forum? Or repost it there? Not sure about the rules here on that.

One piece of advice,

Don't Clean them! Oil them to keep the rust from getting worse, but don't "clean" them until you know how to do that properly.

You can ruin a very nice knife instantly.

Avoid sand paper, or harsh cleaning.

There are methods to get rid of the rust without ruining the knives.

I say that, because a lot of people on here post pics of knives they ruined while "cleaning" them.

I have seen a knife's value go from 10,000+ to 1,000 because some one "cleaned it"

The only real cleaning i can see that needs to be done is the verdigris on the bolsters on some of those knives. Dont use sandpaper.

The rest just have patina from your grandfathers use. Put some oil on them and call it good.

You can't but I can. I think they might get more knowledgeable responses there. Reposting is just dividing your attention span.

And away we go ...

The knives all look great. Please keep them if at all possible, as they have many memories in each knife. You were left some great knives. Sorry about your Grand dad.

Yes, go gentle, most look in pretty good shape. Your grandfather had a great collection

Thanks everyone! As far as cleaning, I wasn't planning on doing too much. I just want to clean the "gunk" off/out of them and get rid of any rust (which isn't much, if any). I'm not going to do anything harsh that could damage anything.

Nice collection! Looks like he had a fondness for Serpentine Jacks.

And yes, clean the gunk out of them, get the dirt and verdigris too. Gun solvent and a toothbrush, oil, soap and water; none of those will hurt, and the knives will be better for it. You don't have anthing that's going to loose a huge amount of value by gentle cleaning.

Man I have a lot to learn. I had no clue what a "Serpentine Jack" was. Had to Google it! Thanks!

I find pipe-cleaners a useful tool :)

Nice collection!

It appears that one of the celluloid handled knives (with the cracked scales) might be outgassing. This might affect the knives which are stored in its closed proximity too.
Store the celluloid handled knives separate from the rest, and even separate from each other.
Inspect them regularly and look for the telltale sign of corrosion of the exposed part of the blades (the blade portion sticking above the handles when the knife is closed).
