Inherited Grandfather's Knife Collection (LOTS of Pictures!!!)

Nice collection!

It appears that one of the celluloid handled knives (with the cracked scales) might be outgassing. This might affect the knives which are stored in its closed proximity too.
Store the celluloid handled knives separate from the rest, and even separate from each other.
Inspect them regularly and look for the telltale sign of corrosion of the exposed part of the blades (the blade portion sticking above the handles when the knife is closed).

Thanks, I didn't know anything about the celluloid issues. I just read all about it. Should I just throw that one away? It is in pretty bad shape?

Love the Bucks and the Old Timer.

Funny you should say that because I think those are my favorites so far. Especially the Old Timer. That one just feels right in my hand, if that makes any sense? Perfect size, perfect weight and just feels solid.

I wish I could pin down the actual year of that Old Timer. All I could find was a range of years.

Could you, please, post a better picture of this knife?

Absolutely! I'll take some more pictures of it later today or tonight.

Good call on that one, littleknife. It definitely looks like classic outgassing damage.

You don't have to throw it away, but don't keep it anywhere near those other knives. I couldn't tell from the pics what the stamp was, but in that condition, it's probably not going to have anything other than sentimental value. If it's a good brand, maybe you could have a rehandle done and carry it as a user.

That really is a great collection, and an excellent connection to your grandfather. Treasure those knives. Thanks for sharing.

Fixed now! Sorry about that!

Derrickm.....thanks for taking the time to post and shows your grandfathers collection. You can tell a lot about a fella by the things he holds dear. I'm sure many of the guys here will help you out in identifying the majority if not all of them

Sorry about your Grandfather. My Papa also acquired, collected, and used a lot of blades and had drawers and a cases of them. I remember being little and him showing me all of them. He gave me my first blade at 5 years old and its been downhill from there. When he passed most of his blades went here and there to who knows who but my mother secured two of his blades for me before they were gone. They are like treasures to me, but still get used from time to time. Knives like to be used ;) Loved looking at all of these pictures took me back a bit.

Great Photos! You have received some great advice from everyone as far as cleaning and displaying. I think it's so cool that you have your grandfathers collection! You definitely can get an idea of his interests just by looking at his collection. I think the shadow box idea is great. Thanks for sharing!!

Any recommendations for a newbie sharpener I should get? I have some "beater" knives I could practice at on. Not looking for anything too fancy. Just something that will get the job done that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Super cool collection. My Dad carried a similar Schrade fixed blade during deer season years ago. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome collection and thanks very much for sharing the pictures. I love that little pearlescent one with the easy-open notch and the bail.

I don't know what other advise you'll get, but I'd take the scales off that one and then clean everything else in an ultrasound tank with something to neutrilize the rust. It's not pitted too badly and can be cleaned up; with new scales it would last another 50 years easy.
