Initial impression of the BK10 by Becker Knives and tools

Thanks for the kind comment, LeeBower. I'm sad to hear that your hunt for the northern lights were fruitless. I do have some pictures of the northern lights, and my wife who is good at photography has plenty. Problem with taking pictures of the northern lights are that they all are "fake" in a sense. This is because you have to extend the shutter speed so much that you catch the light in a whole different way than it looks when you see it in real life. So nothing can really compare to the real deal. As long as we have darkness, and clear skies, there are good chances of seeing the lights. But it's random, and all dependent on solar activity. So we can have it every day and night for a month, then nothing for a week. If you ever travel across the pond, let me know, and I'll take you out on the expanse for some northern light hunting.

It can be quite an unforgiving paradise, but some of its beauty is in its rawness. Your assessment of my survival situation is spot on, Moose. In my kit I prioritize shelter and fire. There's no need for water filtration, and food is actually pretty easy to gather as long as you have the right tools: shotgun, fishing equipment, and the ability to make snares. Extreme cold does require some heavy sleeping bags though, and skis of course. I'm planning on getting myself a pulk:

I really hope to one day take you up on that offer.. I can dream :)

Great pics, looks stunning out there. Kind of looks like your knife resembles my KaBar 1277 in a way, the weight of the handle etc. I'll also add that I like the look of your coat.

have to agree with everyone here. I love reading your posts. you are lucky to be in such a beautiful area.

The pulk is a man pulled sleigh, scandinavian style, Aikiguy. It's usually constructed with some sort of additional kit strapped on it. And thanks for the compliment, MrPocketsOfSteel. My coat is a simple anorak, oldschool, not very tacticool ;) And how is the Ka-Bar 1277 treating you? And cheers for the compliment, OlDutch. It gives me motivation for writing up more posts in the future.

And I'm not a guy that hand out empty promises, LeeBower. Just let me know when you're in the neighborhood, but perhaps chances are that I'm in your neighborhood first. I really want to visit the southern part of the US.

Well, if you are ever in East Tennessee, USA, we'd love to meet ya.

SL, those are wonderful shots of the Norwegian outdoors. I love your write ups and reviews and of course, the pics. The 10 is one I hope to get soon. I have the money for it, but pulling the trigger is difficult because I'm really saving the money for the BeckerWest gathering in a few weeks.

I spent 10 days in Stavanger. But we never left the city. I was working and work didn't include the countryside. I would love to go back someday just to hit the countryside.

I just joined the forum and your review of the BK 10 made it all worthwhile, thanks. I didn't even know any one made such a beast of a folder. How is the steel in terms of time it takes to put an edge back on it? Once again, thanks. Great review.

Beautiful photos as always! I would enjoy seeing your part of the world. The 10 is a nice knife!

Oops, I guess it's not a folder. I looked it up on Amazon and it's called a folder. Wierd

That's very strange, bedrock. It's not a folder, but if it was, it would be one of the beefiest folders known to man. I dont know if you care about the steel and the edge anymore, but it came razorsharp from Ka-Bar, and still is. The 1095 is generally speaking easy to maintain, and pretty easy to put a good working edge on. At least from the experiences I've got with the 9er

If I am ever in the neighborhood I will definitely let you know and vice versa.. If you make it to south Texas, let me know and I will take you out to our ranch. :)
