Initial Impressions: Strider SMF Re-Grind......

I own several Microtech's. But I should tell you that I just ordered my first Strider because of you and your excellent chronicle.

If it's 1/10 as good as your what your pictures show, I know it will be an awesome knife. If not... I'll be ringing Josh's number. :)

Also, what breed of dog do you own? I'd say Bulldog, but it looks far too athletic. And far too interested in that stick. So I'd guess Bulldog and Vizsla??

Thanks you for enjoying this thread.
I just read you ordered an SnG CC and left you some advice on an SnG vs an SMF from my point of view.

I hope you find it informative, and I really hope my experience with both knives came across the right way.

My dog is a BullBoxer (Bulldog crossed with a Boxer)
Crazy fun dogs......

If you have any questions or issues with your new SnG, please send me a PM and I would be more than happy to help you with anything.

I really appreciate the info JR88FAN. I gave it a little thought and just pulled the trigger on an SMF! Ahhh.. my poor wife.. I really like the SMF in the GG (gun grip) style and from what I could tell there were only a couple out there. I have been there before with Microtech, where if you snooze for a couple days contemplating, you lose.. And they all sell out.

I will do as you say and see which one fits me better side by side and send one back. I will definitely let you know how it goes and also show the pics.

Awesome dog too BTW, cool breed combo. I used to have a Bull Mastiff. Yeah.. it didn't like sticks.. She was a very good dog tho..

Thanks So Much!

Awesome man.

The thing is, the SMF's blade is just a hair under 3.5 inches when you subtract the choil.
The SnG is just a hair under 3 inches....

There really isn't a monstrous difference in OAL though, they carry about the same.

Let me know what you think, and like I said, any questions, shoot me a PM.

Just got home, and there's always a heap of cardboard waiting for me to recycle.

Thought I would take some of the smaller boxes and make a few 'puzzles....!

Even with the beating the edge took yesterday it's like going through butter. The capabilities of the SMF with this re-grind really show up here:

Let it be known that I am a fan of JR88FAN. He has shown me the way.. Whether he knows it or not.

But now I have to ask after seeing all of that "out of this world' cutting action. (cutting action that my current knives are not yet capable of)

What do you use to sharpen your Strider SMF with?

A) Wicked Edge
B) Sharp Maker
C) Old School Wet Stones
D) Mountain Top Zen Spherical Diamond-Tungsten Rocks
E) The Sharpness Of Your Mind

What metal is your SMF blade made out of? I believe you could have any one of the following:
A) S30V
B) S35V
C) CTS 204p
D) 3V
E) 154 CM??

I need to know what you are doing. Is it all Josh?? Is he a God sent to us from our Creator to make our knives fitting of the heavens?

I must know!!

P.S. If the answer to first question is "sharpness of your mind", I am totally fucked..

P.P.S. I mean no disrespect by this at all (some take me the wrong way), I really am curious to know what all is coming together here. Thanks!

Sorry Clint, maybe I should visit threads I start more often?!?!

This particular SMF is CPM154

I sharpen free hand using whetstones.
I use a 600 grit and then move up to 1000 and I am done.

I strop more then anything, I use a strop with green compound (6K grit) to maintain my edge, and rarely need the stones unless I damage the edge or it micro chips.

I can tell you that I have experienced zero micro chipping with Striders 154, either before or after the regrind.

Actually, micro chipping was my big worry when taking this knife down to Josh's suggested 15DPS, but zero issues just like he said.

A couple of days ago I bounced the edge off concrete (accidentally) and nothing happened, as in NOTHING!

I was cutting off a daddy long legs legs (I know, I can be a child, but this was a serious edge test) one at a time.
It was sitting on my garage door about a foot from the ground, and I got a bit too aggressive with a stroke!

BTW, this thing is so sharp it will cut those skinny little legs off.....

Here are a couple of pics of the edge. (I tried my best)
You might have to take my word for it, but after all the beating and testing I have put this knife through since the regrind, it's perfect.

I have stropped it twice since the regrind, no stones.....

Very nice! I had Big Chris do the same for my S110V SnG. I really dig how Josh handled the transition of the ricasso. Looks really cool.

^^^ are the improvments in the capabilites of the knife in line with my findings to date?

Here's a better shot of Josh's transitions.
Should have included this earlier in the thread, but here it is for anyone this may interest....
