Just opened the box on some new knives so I thought I’d let you folks know what I thought.

I placed my order on Thursday with Ragnar’s, received an email that the order was sent out on Friday, and received the order this morning! That’s pretty good!

After reading so many great Mora reviews, I ordered a 711-G, I think it’s the same blade as the 510 with a bigger softer handle. I would have added a 510to the order, but they were out. In short I’m very impressed with the knife. The handle feels really good, the blade is well finished and razor sharp. I have a hard time believing that you can buy this knife for $12.50! I haven’t used the knife yet, so I hope that I got a better sample than Steel-Junky posted about.

I also took a chance and ordered a model I couldn’t find any info about, a Frost’s 223. Here is Ragnar’s description:

“#C-223; This is big knife designed for butchering big game. It would also work nicely as a general camp knife for food preparation, building shelters, etc. You could consider it the Swedish version of the Leuku. The carbon steel blade is about 8 3/4" long, 1 1/2" wide, and .075" thick. The 5 1/2" hard plastic handle is molded directly on the tang and works well with both average and large hands. The handle is shaped and textured for a secure grip even when wet. It comes with either a bright yellow handle that's easy to find in the bush, or an unobtrusive black handle. Please specify your preference.
The knife comes with a sturdy leather belt sheath for $36.
It's also available without a sheath for $15.”

I got the yellow handled variety with no sheath. The knife is definitely light for its size due to the (relatively) thin blade. The balance is definitely weighted towards the front of the knife, it kind of feels like a compact, sharp, pointy machete, which is exactly what I was hoping for! The finish on the blade of this knife isn’t as fine as on the 711, but for $15.00 you’re not going to hear me complain. The edge is good and even, it just came with a couple of burs from the factory that were easily removed. It doesn’t come quite as sharp as the 711, but it won’t take much work to get it there. All in all I’m very impressed with both of these knives!

I’ll be sure to let you know what I think after I get a chance to use them.

Well, if you have any problems with a bad edge (chipping, rolling, poor edge retention in general), don't give up - take your most coarse stone out and sharpen the edge back a little and give it another go. That has always done the trick for me. With cheap massproduced bladeware stuff like a ruined factory edge happens. It is very common. Rare are the cases where sharpening off the poor steel doesn't solve the problem.

Hope you'll enjoy your Mora. :)

I had the black-handled version of the C-223 (until I lost it.) I didn't find it particularly useful, but it did fill a niche and I miss it. It great for clearing VERY light brush and grass--things that are too light for a machete. I don't think most people will find a use for it, but it worked for me. It's certainly not a Leuku. Anyone who buys one thinking its a cheap Leuku will be severely disappointed.

I had a C223 a while back and was disappointed in it. BUT I was thinking it was going to be an economy Leuku, like Scott suggested. Barring that, it took a stupidly sharp edge and would have made a great camp kitchen blade and did do well with snap cuts on lighter vegetation.

I have three of those 223's they are great knives but i use them for meat processing and other butcher knife chores. I know pit dog has one too.
