Mark's work is now featured in Dr David Darom's brand new, hot-off-the-presses "World of Art Knives IV". Copies available through Nordic Knives, the exclusive distributor.
What a COOL piece! It's an Ulu by Mark Knapp, handle and stand created from gimlet wood, lapis lazuli and gold leaf - with Mark's outstanding Damascus blade material. Gimlet wood is typically found in Western Australia.
.
The Alaskan ULU (OO-loo) is an extremely versatile cutting tool crafted by the Native Alaskan people over five thousand years ago. The knife was primarily used by Eskimo women for skinning and cleaning fish and has played an important role in the survival of the Arctic people, even often used to cut children's hair. However, the a sweep of the blade from a sharp ulu can sever fingers, and the sharp tips do substantial damage when used as a weapon.
The holes in the gimlet wood on these pieces Mark makes are something akin to wormholes, which are dug out with a small pick before inlaying. Height = 5", Blade = 7" point to point. It is WICKED SHARP. Only the lapis and gold ulu in the middle is for sale, not the ones on either side of it.,.
The best way to understand this wonderful piece is to check out the images. They say it all (only positives, of course). As new.
