I was wondering how someone does gold inlay?
What they used and where to get it at?

Thanks,
Stefan

Gold inlay is typically done to enhance the engraving in metal. This can be done with sheet or wire. I will give you a basic description on how wire is inlayed. This is by no way instructions as the process is much more difficult to do than described here.

Start by cutting a normal line with a graver. The channel made by this cut is then under cut on both sides of the channel to make a dovetail of sorts and raising a bit of a burr. The gold wire is then laid in the channel and chased (drove)in with a brass punch tapped with a chasing hammer. This action expands the gold into the dovetail and pushes the burr down locking the gold in place.

I have only used 24K gold purchased from Rio Grande.

Hope this helps

There are tutorials in both the ALR Forums and ALR Archives. I know there is a pictorial with discription in the archives under tutorials. I think you have to be registered. This is a small and friendly place with some amazing art work on historical firearms... carving, inlay, engraving, checkering, pinned checkering and a lot more are shown and talked about. I have no idea how well the search function works but, as I said, it's not a big place.

like a wire inlay in the handle?
Yes, like wire.

I was thinking about when blued (after I order the stuff) the gold will provide a very nice contrast on the handle. I just have to figure out really how to do it and if it is feasable from both monetary perspective and just physically.

Mace is the local guy I'd PM. He does some beautiful wire inlay. It's relatively easy using simple tools you can make yourself from old hack saw blades. You basically use square wire, make V groove by pressing a small gouge into the wood forming a channel in the pattern you are inlaying. Press the wire into the channel, tap in lightly with a small hammer and file / flat. Once again, just a rough outline of the work.

Ah, well if that's the case then you'll probably want a 'graver to groove and hammer it in. You're CAN do it with hand tools but you just upped the ante with that little bit of info...

Is this the kind of stuff you are talking about (see post #38 & #39)? http://www.lindsayengraving.com/school/forum/showthread.php?t=1391&page=4

Here is a little discussion on technique... http://americanlongrifles.org/old_board/index.php?topic=10994.0

Searching more at ALR (I searched "metal inlay", or at the engraving forum will very likely tell you quite a bit about inlaying metal in metal... or wire in metal or wood.

Mike

Edited to add... further on in the 22 page thread of the first link is some pretty amazing stuff.

There are liquid solutions available.
usually 2 part solutions and a precipation reaction.(2 part solutions)
Gold, Silver, Nickel...
I can't find it right now

Also try dental supply houses for gold filling kits.

Search jewellery and engraving supply houses. If you want thin fills inside engraved lines and don't want to engrave the gold inlay itself, it should do what you want.

Enamels are also available to do the same thing in color, fill the indentatin and bake to cure.

Interesting, more options!

Everytime I read this I start getting more excited! I just have to research and decide which way I want to go.
