Inlay or overlay? What would you call this?

I got mine straight from 3M.

There's a way to contact an engineer somehow to discuss your project.

They sent me a sample.

I think it would be much easier to deal with if it was thicker.
Mine has no backing, it is strictly adhesive.

I used it on a venture I had some years ago making stomp pads for snowboards.
I adhered these little nuggets of aluminum to the fiberglass deck.
In all the years I used them, in extreme conditions, all over the world I only ever had the adhesive fail once.
And this was out of thousands of parts.
Most of the time there was a failure, the fiberglass delaminated!

That's pretty cool, Fell- snowboarding really puts the stomp on those stomp pads, plus brittleness from the cold.
I've always wanted to fool around with that tape, but was afraid of showing up at the ER with my hand glued to my nose or something.

Now, how come there's no ER for mistakes you make on a knife? You could show up and have an expert take care of it and bill it to insurance....oh, wait, I'm sposed to be the expert...
Anyway, I appreciate the info, will have to order some and play- any special cleaning prep you use?
