I have been requested to make 7 folders (from kits they have in hand) for some folks within the local church. All I would be required to do is assemble the kits and add scales with the cross inlay. These are for the Preacher and the aldermen within the church.

One of the requests was for an inlay of a cross on the presentation side of each knife scale.

Cross conchos are easy to find, but finding them SMALL enough for a folder is another thing!

Anyone have a source for small conchos or inlays that have a cross on them?

I haven't taken the job since I can't guarantee the inlay...

Seems like they should exist but I have not seen them. How about a cross that would hang on a bracelet maybe even a bracelet for a small girl? The size is going to depend on the amount of room you have.

Talk to a jeweler they often have crosses in a wide variety of sizes and metals. I expect some of the same folks who want the knives made might have a few laying about. Silver ones should be pretty cheap.

You NAILED IT!

I called a local jewelry shop and they have all types of sterling silver.

Thanks for the info!

One option is to have them waterjet out of titanium.
if they are big enough!!

Hi Ernie!

The inlays requested were of a cross. The local jeweler has quite a few charms that are about 1/4" tall that will fit the bill perfectly for the scale size on the folders! :D

I plan to make a small "hole" in the scale, fill it with clear epoxy over the top of the cross, and then sand to a shine over the top.

This has worked for me in the past with larger conchos, etc.

If using that method, use casting resin for the epoxy. System Three clear coat, Clear Cast, etc. should work. Plain epoxy will dull too fast and isn't nearly as clear.

To inlay the crosses as done on most folders, check with David at Great Lakes Waterjet. He sells all sort of inlay shapes and makes the templates to do the inlay. He could cut you a template and the matching crosses.(this would be more costly than just epoxying them in a recess, but will be much more professional and permanent.) Here is a tutorial on using the template and inlay system.

GREAT INFO!

I called David today and he can do what I need for a VERY good price. Waiting for the OK from the accountant (wife) and should order next week.

From talking to him and looking at the website I can tell this guy is an artist!

Thanks again for the assistance!

Charlie
