Inova X5?

I spend my days and some nights crawling in and out of basements and attics. Have had a couple of X5's over the years ( lost-not broken/failed). What I like about this light is that it has never hit the bottom of it's regulator circuit and cut out on me ( I don't think it has one).Very long run times going from very bright with fresh batteries to very dim as the batteries hit bottom. The big thing for me is they never leave me in the dark and for lighting up the circuit boards I'm working on - I'd rather have their even pattern than a high intensity focused beam. Depends on what you need the tool for.
But at a min. a very rugged well made tool.

Can you buy Fenix lights at any brick and mortar stores?

Target carries them. Honestly, the X5 is a nice light, but it suffers from all close-up brightness and no throw. I'd look into Fenix or something of the like that are barely more expensive, have multiple modes, longer runtime, are brighter, and much better beam throw on the same 123a batteries.

I have one that goes camping with me as a back-up light, but the P3D gets FAR more actual use.

Indeed. The X5's are direct drive: no regulation. It makes for an ugly runtime graph (not those pretty flat ones that you see these days), but it runs forever and you have pleeeenty of warning to change batteries.

Again, just to be clear, I'm not saying that the X5 is superior to new lights. I EDC new-fangled multi-level regulated Cree lights with all sorts of whiz bang features. But the X5's are in my emergency packs (not the only lights in some of them). I think they fill a niche and they fill it extremely well.

My Target definitely does not carry Fenix lights. I can't speak for any others. I don't think I've seen Fenix lights in any B&M stores in my area. Maaaaybe in a gun store, but I might just be misremembering.

The Inova X-5 series will always have a role among my collection of lights. The sterile MilSpec natural hard anodized finish model is the only one that carries an NSN (National Stock Number).

I' ve never seen Fenix lights in any big chain store in my area.

On another note, if you can find one of the old tried and true USA made CMG Infinity Ultra models, you will have a light that can run for up to at least 14 hours continuously on a single AA alkaline battery! Its output is about the same if not better than the Inova X-5! And almost 1/ 3 smaller in OAL.

Well, I got the iTP C9 in the mail today, it was a bit smaller that I expected but it feels nice and solid. Great light for the price.
