My Sage 2 isn't very old, I've had it a little over a month. Within that time the lock bar has traveled from around 30% to 70%. It moved that much fairly quickly, but it hasn't moved past 70 in the last couple of weeks.

I googled, but I couldn't find much info on the lockup of the sage 2. Only one thread that actually discussed the lockup came up, so here I am asking this question.

If any of you guys have a Sage 2, can you chime in and tell me how your lockup is, and how long it's been that way? I am curious to see if this is normal for this knife. I am not too concerned about it, but I would like to know if I should expect to move over to 100 in short order. Thanks in advance.

I also just picked one of these up about a month ago, along with a lot of other knives this month, but I have only carried mine once. Really like the knife but just haven't gotten around to this one yet. Mine doesn't go to far over yet, like you descibed yours to be at first. I think its probably normal wear in of the frame lock you are seeing. I don't think it will travel much more for a long time. At least this is my guess. My Sebenza did about the same thing and I've had it since 2001 and the lock still stops right about 65-70 percent. Its been like this for years now and locks up fine. I think if your knife is locked well, no blade play, it will be fine like it is now. Again, just MHO.

Hello,

Ive talked to two other people and they have the same thing going on with the Sage 2. Both of them haven't had any more noticeable movement after about 70%

Have a good one,

Chris

The sebenza has a carburized lock face though. The Sage doesn't have a treated lock face. Hopefully it still won't move though.

That is good to know. Thanks for the info man.

once the lock bar settles, i wouldn't expect it to move anymore for a long time under normal use. thats my experience with new frame locks

Just bought the sage today, when I get it and use it for a while I'll let you know my experience jdavis ;)

Mine did the same thing John. It had me a little worried, so I haven't been carrying it really at all. It makes me think that every time I open it, its getting closer and closer to 100%! I hope it does "settle in" (in my case at about 80%).

I'm of the understanding that the Sebenza doesn't have a treated lock face??? IDK
If you search within that forum, Chris states that it does. It is treated/ hardened to prevent premature wear. Titatnium is significantly softer than hardend CPM-S30V.

I've had my Sage2 for about 13 months now. The lock up bar has moved from about 50% when new to about 65%. This movement took about 8 months. In the last 5 months it has not moved any farther. Hopefully it will stay there. I'm not sure if the method of opening the blade matters - flicking it open versus a slower thumb extention method. I use the later.

My sage 2 was very similar to yours. I got it brand new at around 40% lockup and it moved to around 60% within the first two weeks of compulsive flicking open and closing hundreds of times. Lockup hasnt budged in over a year of consistent edc. I was very worried when I first got it because it was by far my most expensive purchase at the time but it seems like it just needed to wear in a bit and settle in.

Thanks RevDevil, I learned something new. I still think the Sage 2 will hold up over time though.

I had this issue with a Sebenza and contacted CRK. They said if it ever went to 100% and the lockup wasn't solid, they would repair/replace it...Spyderco's warranty specifically says that if it's wore out, that's pretty much it. If course, the Sebbie cost 3 times what the Sage costs, so I guess that's to be expected.

I've had my sage 2 about 2 months. I open and close it on average 50 times a day, it's my version of a worry bead. The lockup hasn't moved from 40% since I've gotten.

This is why I won't buy anything but lockbacks from spyderco. IMO liner and framelocks wear too fast for my tastes, and if they won't replace them under warranty after moderate use, well, that's just not cool...

The Sebenza's lock face IS hardened (through heat), but it is not carbidized. A few makers do that, but CRK is not one of them, though as stated, they do harden the lock face.

You're right, it's not carbidized.

It's carburized, like I said in the quote. ;)

Knives like the Military have a lifetime warranty. Why wouldn't they fix it if it had bladeplay or wasn't locking correctly?
