Input on Sage 2 Lock Lifespan

FWIW when the Ti/G10 Military came out with the previously-unmentioned lock bar insert, I remember a thread where it was asked another asking why Spyderco felt the need to have it. The answer was they had received some in to be fixed. From this we can gather that (1) they can be worn out and (2) they will fix it if it occurs (at least while they're being produced).

I had this issue with a Sebenza and contacted CRK. They said if it ever went to 100% and the lockup wasn't solid, they would repair/replace it...Spyderco's warranty specifically says that if it's wore out, that's pretty much it. If course, the Sebbie cost 3 times what the Sage costs, so I guess that's to be expected.

I think we would all like to hear from Sal on this, please.

I was worried about this too, before I got my Sage 2. Then I came across a book called "the Tactical Folding Knife" by Bob Terzuola, and he's a huge advocate of titanium for liner locks, which would have the same wear issues. He stated that titanium will wear in a bit, and then the contact face becomes work hardened and lockup stays pretty much constant. My Sage 2 is at 50%, and has been there for a while, after much opening and closing.

As far as replacement issues, I've never known Spyderco to not do the right thing. They did have wear issues on the Ti Millie, which they fixed with a steel insert, and as far as I know, customers could exchange their Ti-only one with a steel-insert one. DOn't quote me on that, that's heresay, but it fits with the company's track record. I'm sure if one wore out on you in a short amount of time, it would be replaced. I think the warranty clause is more to keep people from bringing is a 15-year old liner lock that has worn out and asking for a replacement.

I've had my Sage 2 since it was first released and it has seen a lot of use; lock up is still at 50%.

I have the same issue! Mine wore really fast, I haven't been using the knife much at all. Started to open and close it a couple of days ago, and now the lock sets at at least 80-90%!
It does this when "flicking" the blade open, when this happens it's very difficult to unlock the blade again, almost feels like your gonna brake the framelock because of the pressure you have to apply to get it to disengage...

I'm waiting for a reply from Spyderco regarding this...

It's really to bad that it does like this, because I really like the knife!

You may want to try tightening the frame and/or pivot. Quick movement in a liner lock is often an indication that something is loose.

Everything is tighten, think it's the titanium that is wearing off...

It will settle in and then not move for a looooong time.

Mine settled right around 90% but hasn't moved a bit since then, and it's solid as a rock. Use it and enjoy it, you'll be fine!

I agree. Had mine for six years, and still use it multiple times every day. It started out around 30%, and settled pretty quickly at around 75%. I flip it hard and fast 99% of the time. Still locks like a tank. I know I'm replying to a post more than four years old, but wanted to share my experience.
