Input sought on my bowie

Much nicer. Very clean look. I love the knobby pommel and the contrast in the handle.

But where is your maker's mark?

I like it David, How did you work the Fuller in just out of curiosity? The ball on the end is a bit big for my taste but I like the Redux blade much better.

Thanks Ryan, I am glad you like the revised blade better. It was a bit of work. The steel is Aldo's W2, and I found it soft enough to grind the fullers in using dremel attachments. Once I got the groove in somewhat, it was a snap to deep and straighten them. I know the ball is a little large, but by the time I got around to it I had just about run out of gas, and since I already had it done, I used it. It is a matter of taste anyway, as some folks like a more substantial ball, others less large. I figure I can live with it.

I agree David, definitely a matter of taste! I like the Bowie, nice job.

I don't like it.... change it back.:p

Ha! I looks completely different. I do think the handle proportion is much better but I do miss some of that raw texture, brother. Something is a little off with the clip, IMO. I really can't compare the two as they are vastly different.

Rick,

One thing that bothered me about my original version was weight. The knife weighed 1.8 oz., pretty hefty for a bowie I thought. That's one reason I didn't hesitate to change it to a full flat grind. So, yeah, the second version is a utterly different style. AS for your comment about the clip, it's un changed fron the first version, not sure what you mean. Ain't making knives great though???

David, the running out of steam is why I suggested to move on to another knife. The finishing and small details that you do at the end of a build is usually what can take a knife from “Nice” to “Oh My God” and it's when you need some of that steam.
That being said, I still like the revised version better.

As far as Ryan's ball size preferences...well...I won't go there. ;)

touché (Notice the little french accent just for you Patrice!)

This is defiantly a large improvement from the original.
I love the clean transitions and the new handle material and the revised guard/pommel look amazing.
Great job.

Much better but I too still think there is something a little off with the clip. I think next time a more subtle curve would be in order. On this one, if you brought back the clip a little to just behind where the fuller starts it would have been more appealing to me; a less prominent transition (less acute) from the curve to the spine. Just my opinion but I still think you did a great job.

I did not see the original post, but I think the new version is much better. Very nice work.

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to comment on my bowie; your input was a big help to me as I'd gotten too close to the knife. I knew something was off, bit it took you guys to help me see what was wrong. I went wrong right from the beginning on this one, as I attempted a full tang with a full guard. Nothing wrong with that, but I should have did a box frame handle. If I'd done that the original would have worked out. The handle would have been in porportion to the blade. Still, the original was pretty hefty and that would have bothered me anyway.

As for the clip, I didn't want a subtle clip, and when viewing the knife firsthand it looks just fine. One thing for sure, it's a LOT easier to get it right the first time. Modifying an existing knife is not something I want to do again. Oh, and I also learned a lot about design elements, again, thanks all!
