Inspired by Ban's mods (here and here), I modified my milganza MRS...
- Widening the choil to allow the "close to edge" grip;
- Grinding the butt (à la Active Duty);
- Polishing the spine and handle.

I'm quite happy with the results - the micarta, even if the grooves are removed - is grippy enough (and so comfy now). I'd like a thinner blade profile, but I think I'll use the knife as is for now. Thinning the blade could prove to be a challenge with only a dremel tool :o

Anyway, I felt like sharing my newly fav knife...Here's the "before" picture, followed by pics of the knife as of now. Any comments and suggestions are welcome!

Very nice! How do you like those canvas micarta slabs smoothed? I smoothed and contoured the slabs on my BATACLE, and it is now the best feeling knife ever.
The polished spine seems to be a popular mod nowadays, it definitely dresses a coated blade up nicely. Thanks for sharing.

Looks great! That just proves that there is room in the Busse lineup for a Meaner Duty or an Active Street!

I like the smooth slabs very much, very comfortable. Still plenty grippy (by the very texture of the micarta); I wouldn't perform big thrust with this knife, even with the textured slabs anyway. For the polished spine, since I had grinded out the butt of the knife (and a portion of the choil), I tought I could do the whole knife as well. Plus, It evens out the slabs with the blade perfectly (my MRS slabs were slightly off - 0.5 millimeters? not enough to see it but you could feel it).

Yeah...a dremel and a Busse = scary. But I used it only to grind the choil and the butt. The rest was done by hand & sandpaper. It could be polished more, but this will be my EDC when out of the city, so I left it like that.

Turned out great! Good job. I'm really enjoying the polished spine look. :thumbup:

lookin good. I like handle mods, as there is no way to mss up micarta's heat treat.:D

But I will leave blade mods to the shop except for removing finishes and polishing.

Looks good to me :thumbup: I also prefer the smooth handle feel.

:D Great minds think alike on the finger choil! I sent a user MrLr LE in to Busse 2 weeks or so ago for a reprofiled edge... AND an enlarged finger choil! I can't wait to see it now, yours is an excellent preview. :thumbup: Hey, like that polished spine with the SAGE too! Very cool. Nice grips, me likey. Great mods! Looks really good. :thumbup:

Very cool!!!. . . Nice work!!!. . . . Now if I can just get you, Ban, and Jaxx to carpool to Wauseon everyday. . . I can fill our grinding room with fresh talent!!!! :thumbup: :D

Hey BOSS we would have to get Grinducci, Wash, and a few others to carpool with us also :thumbup: Wash would be great at turning out one of a kind knife blanks ;)

Wash is in but Grinducci is banned from the grinding room for one year!. . . We love the guy but we fear his grinding prowess!!!!. . . His grinducci-fu is weak!. . . Well, maybe "weak" isn't the right word to describe it. . . it's more like "confusing". . . That's it. . . his grinducci-fu is confusing!!!!:eek:

Hey didn't I win the bet at blade. Whatever it was I won it. I know that if I had lost my next knife would have had to go to Grnducci, but for the life of me I cannot remember what I won. Crap. I don't even remember what the bet was about? oh well.

At least my stuff won't be going to grinducci. although his Micarta-Fu is excellent.:thumbup:

Jerry,

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but you might want to rethink that offer. You obviously haven't seen the before pics of my Bandaid.

A job at the Wauseon shop...That's it! I'm emigrating to the States right now :)

As for messing up with the heat treat (Cobalt's comment), I proceeded very slowly, stopped when the blade was hot when touching it (hot, but I was able to keep it in the hand so not REALLY hot). Let the blade cool down in water, and keep grinding with very little pressure. It took time, for sure, but I hope the heat treat hasn't been altered...What do you guys think? How do you guys proceed?

...and thanks for the good comments :D!

I am sure you did not ruin the HT :thumbup:

I was strictly speaking of myself. I would not want to chance it. But if I did do it I would be so paranoid that I would take hours to grind something that should only take minutes.
