Anybody know what it costs to have a 100a 220v line run in to a shop. The shop is about a hundred yards from the pole.I want to get a 30kw induction heater but my shop doesn't have enough power available, heck I doubt my entire house can run that much power. The induction heater runs at 380v,35kva.

Around here, I think probably in the neighborhood of $900 to have it done.

Thanks Nathan.I was worried it would be many thousands.I dont want to spend over 5,000 for the induction heater and electrical work.

If the heater is indeed a 380v and not a 280v then you are going to need a step up transformer in addition to the electrical work.

If you need 100 amp service to your shop, you are going to have to talk to your power company in all likelihood and find out what it will cost to have a new drop from the pole, and a separate meter for the shop. You most likely will not be able to run a 100 amp sub pannel to your shop, particularly not at 100 yards distance, and certainly not without having at least 300 amp service to the house itself. If you've currently got 60 or 100 amp service in the house, you're looking at around 3 grand to upgrade to 300 amp service and another thousand at least to run underground feeder cable to the shop from that panel.

Without knowing your specific situation, your current home service, distance from your panel to the shop, etc it's hard to give a good estimate. For you consideration though I upgraded from 100 amp service to 200 amp service last year, and then ran the 60 feet of cable and dug the trench i needed to my garage to put a single 50 amp welder outlet out there, and my total cost was about 2300$, and would have been closer to 3000$ if I hadnt done the trench work and cable work for the welder outlet myself.

I think Justin has this one - you will want to call the electric Co. The fortunate part is that it may be cheaper than running the wire. I don't know how far you would have to run from your house, but 100 yds rated at 100A will probably set you back close to 1K just for the wire.

Thanks everyone.Ill call the electric company and see what they have to say.The home is on a 100a circuit. The Induction heater is 480v not 380v.I appreciate all the experience and advice.I sure hope its not going to be several grand or I'll have to wait and save.I've been wanting an I.H. for a long time and the costs have really come down from when I first learned about them.I could get away with a 15kw I.H. but I have learned to buy more than what you need with machinery and tools because it saves money in the long run.Plus with 30kw,large smelts of steel will be in my future:D

I think it depends on your location. When I had a fire I needed to install a temp box. The box and stuff cost me about a few hundred. My cousin set it up and the power comapny charged me a very small fee for the connection. I had to spent I think &50 mfor an inspection. When they connected to the rebuilt house with all new electric it was the same thing. If you can buy and install the main equipment at the shop it may not be to bad for the power company to hook it up. Good luck Jim

And when you have the new drop run, pull in 200 amp service. Install a 200 amp amp panel box in the shop, too. It won't cost much or any more, but you may need the power later. Also, when checking with the power company, see if 3 phase is on the pole near the shop? Probably not, but if so,have it pulled in. It will make running large equipment much easier.

I recently installed a sub panel and ran 100 amps out to a shop, then ran three phase from there to another shop. I'm pretty sure the total length was pretty close to the distance you're looking at and I don't remember it being too bad, but now I'm not so sure...

Please be sure to follow up with how it turns out for you.

UPDATE.
Well right after I posed this question I had to move. The good news is our new place has a 200 amp service. The bad news is, moving used a lot of my play money, so I'll have to save for a couple months to buy my I.H. As soon as I do, I'll post some pics:)

You'll probably need to run a 200A 220V line for a 35KW I.H. 100A at 220V is only 22KW.

When I inquired about having new service & meter run to my shop the electric company told me they would need to upgrade my account to a commercial one, which would also increase my rates.

Luckily my house has 300 amp service with a dedicated transformer so I just ran a 100 amp remote box out to the shop.
