instruments

I've been playing violin since I was eight, I'm 24 now. I played in a lot of orchestras, did a lot of performances, played with a group on the steps of the US capitol building... then I dislocated my left elbow and did a lot of damage. That put the violin on hold for a while... that happened in January 2002, I'm only now getting back to the point where I can play for any extended period of time without pain.

I wanted to play professionally, but then I got to college and realized that a lot of the music majors were pricks and became a little disallusioned with the classical world, so I haven't played classical much in a few years. I've started exploring different sounds that the violin can make and really enjoy some of my metal violin creations.

My main fiddle is an old handmade German instrument from the early 1920s and I play with a newer handmade bow that I bought new when I was 16. I also play a Fender electric violin through a few different amps and pedals. Great fun.

When I was 16 I decided to try my hand at viola and still have a hell of a time trying to comprehend alto clef  In high school I played trombone, but absolutely hated marching band, so I quit after my 10th grade year. I picked up a mandolin when I was 18 and fell in love with that... I've got a nice Mid-Missouri A style mando and a Fender five string electric.

Guitar has become a new passion of mine. I love metal and I've been teaching myself guitar in hopes of actually putting some music to an idea I've had for years. I'm currently playing an early 80s Strat with Texas special pickups... great blues guitar, but not so much for metal. But it'll do because it plays so easily. I've always thought Telecasters were easier to play, but this Strat plays better than any Tele I've tried.

Music and knives are my biggest hobbies... if I could only find a way to combine the two without causing major bodily harm...

Same here... My mom is worried that I'm going to cut my fingers off and then won't be able to play music anymore. :D

Leatherbird - I picked up a '00 MiM Strat at the store that I take lessons at.

It had just came in that day and eveyone was fussing over it. I liked it so much I bought it on the spot. It's modified with Graphtech saddles, nut, and string trees, and Sperzel locking tuners. There is a tone control modification too.

My teacher is pretty cool and seems to know his stuff. He can explain the answers to the theory questions I keep throwing at him. He's a lot younger than me but I don't have a problem with that.

Probably more info than you needed, but thanks for asking.

And your Strat ? What are you playing ?

Alex,
I have 4,6 actually, two are disassembled being redone,my main guitar,my Pride and Joy is a Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Series.I knew him.He was a friend.A friend who passed far too early,Stevie singlehandedly rescued Blues from the oblivion it was heading.Buddy Guy,another legend for sure, said,I never cry but when I heard Stevie was gone I lay on the bed and cried like a little baby.
What's your tone control mod?

Doug:)

My toys.
An 'Brazilian viola', (the word viola, arguably comes from the vihuela, as its a little guitar) five double strings, tunned in open chords. Its a brazilian folk guitar. The red strat body has an hambucker from an Les Paul (1974); an teisco Del rey from the 60's and an 1935 Oahu Lap steel.
And Yes, the pickups configuration was shamelessly(sp?) stolen from Ry Cooder gear. :D

Doug,

Wow. You knew the man. I don't know what to say. Yes, much too soon. I've often wondered where he would be today.

I do try to emulate his playing, but I feel I will never get to that point. Then again, not many people do.

The tone mod is minor. The bridge pickup is wired to the tone instead of the middle one. No different electronic parts or anything.

Six of them ! Wow.

Just got back from a 3 week European Tour with my band. This was my beast of a rig overseas. I've got Mesa Boogie gear at home and 4 basses(the pictured Fender Aerodyne jazz being my newest), no pictures of anything else right now since I came home to a dead harddrive and lost all of my docs, pics, and music of the last 10 years.

pics from the tour are here... http://photobucket.com/albums/a218/ZJChaser/Europe 2k6/
I'm slowly adding them in backwards order, only have the last few days up so far. thousands of pics to sort through and resize.
