Great info on the forums. Just getting my feet wet but have a quick question.

The USPS website says there is a maximum on insurance for parcels sent US to Canada of $650. I found an alamo bowie knife on ebay right now that I am interested in but it may go well over the 650 and I am determined to get it BUT want to make sure I am covered. Everyone says USPS to Canada is the way to go but wondering can the seller send the sheath as one item for the max on insurance and the fixed blade for the other? At least that would cover me to 1300 or so. But don't want to end up with a sheath and no blade and half my investment either. Is there a secondary insurance method?

Any advice would be helpful. The auction ends the day after the Academy Awards so I want to contact the seller ahead of time to get this sorted.

Personally, I wouldn't use USPS for international shipping.

I'd go with FedEx or DHL. You can insure to your heart's content when you use a real international courier service. You can also do real-time tracking with them. Ask the Seller if he/she would be willing to use them and for them to give you a quote.

Thanks for the advice. It sounded like there were restrictions on sending through FedEx or DHL. I will look into it. Guess one can never assume. Glad I asked and thank you for your advice.

USPS Express International mail is the quickest and safest way to ship. You can get up to $5000.00 worth of insurance.

Wouldn't recommend using anything but USPS. They have some handling fees that will surprise you. Ship USPS express.

Thanks for that additional info. For some reason my browser only showed Priority Mail which has the lower insurance limit but I changed browsers and got the Express Int'l settings. THANKS A big help

I use only USPS when buying something from the US. FedEx and UPS charge pretty insane fees when crossing the border (whether Canada customs would even require you to pay any duty, etc. on your parcel or not). On the other hand, if you're already dropping well over 650$ on a single knife, you probably have enough money to pay said fees without losing any sleep over it.

Here are UPS's fees vaguely explained, for example:
http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.html

I've also found USPS to be a deal more reliable than FedEx or UPS...I've had the UPS morons leave some pretty valuable and/or fragile parcels on my friggin' driveway / curb for all the world to see/steal/run over, for example.

+1. I only do USPS all over the world. Never had a problem with USPS anywhere on this planet!

That may be but it did NOT work out well for us. We sent (Christmas presents for my kids) 2 i pads back to my mom because they didn't work right. We registered them. We insured them for $500. USPS said they were delivered but no one was home. My mom is retired & was at home ALL day that day. Signature was NOT even close. My mom has distinctive writing. We filed a claim. We were denied. We filed an appeal. We are awaiting the outcome but was told by an employee " I have NEVER in my 20 yrs seen an appeal go in favor of the customer. So basically, the insurance is worthless if it gets stolen by a postal employee.

That works if it's a high value item you're eyes open on the fees.

Any other carrier than USPS has additional brokerage and handling fees.

I've paid 25 shipping and 45 brokerage on a 10$ item.
We also then pay 13% GST tax on those additional fees.

If you are really afraid of loss, ship it USPS registered mail.
Same service that they ship gold and handguns.
