Integral Tomahawk Tutorial

Sam, Please don't crack or break this hawk. I hope to see it finished in the near future. Like Tai said, nice to see you younger fellows keeping the fire burning.

Good tips, Sam. Thanks! When I first started swinging a hammer, I realized how much I was trying to muscle the steel rather than let the weight of the hammer and the anvil do the work. I've since tried to loosen up a bit, but I'm still figuring out hammer control to hit where I need to hit :D. I tried a glove at first as well, and quickly found it to be just as you said: more fatiguing. I need to try a wrist brace and man-up my sissy little arm ;). If I ever get the forge fired back up, I'll take you up on your offer of a video critique.

Sam, we are going to have to get together before the NJ show this year. You can teach me how to make stuff with the new hammers I've been waiting on for the last 2yrs:thumbup:

I don't know how to tell you this Rick,... but I don't think you're ever getting one! LOL

Definately, then you can swing the sledge to make your new hammers here. Teach a man to fish......

Seriously, let me know, we could definately do this.

If you were closer i'd just have you come over! I can get a little kid to out hit someone twice they're age with better hammer technique :D Do you shoot?

Ray, no worries, going to do this one right.

I do indeed shoot. I live the land of the free down in Texas, so I also have a firearm on me pretty much everywhere I go. I tell you what. One of these days I'll make it up to your neck of the woods, and you can help me figure out what the heck I'm doing with a hammer. Then, you can head down to my neck of the woods, and we'll go out to the outdoor range, shoot some rifle and lots of pistol at paper and metal targets, shoot clays out on the throwing lanes, and blow up all kinds of random stuff out on the farm.

AWESOME! You got it man anytime!

That also allows me to relate forging to you, forging is alot like reflex shooting, or shot chasing. You chase your last blow to accomplish what you want to accomplish doing slight adjustments to angle and direction. You are not taking careful aim so much as just flowing with the work.

Makes sense, Sam. And just like shooting, it benefits from proper mechanics and consistency. When shooting handguns or rifles for accuracy, you want to establish a mechanically sound grip in the same way every time so that your shots begin to automatically line up where you intended. That's the kind of thing I just haven't had the proper instruction or enough practice to get down consistently with a hammer. You've got me itching to hit hot metal. Thanks for the motivation and the tips!

Sam, I had an email from Matt. One of these days in the not-too-distant future, we're going to get together and head over your way. I've got a lot on my plate for the near future, but as we get later in the spring, maybe we can work something out. I'll be in touch.

Hello. Why there is no pictures here in this thread?
Is there any option on getting my hands on this tutorial with photos ?

Welcome Ulfabaninn.
The thread is ten years old. The photo hosting sites used have probably long ago deleted the images. You could email Sam directly and see if he still has the images you want, but I doubt he does.

When pulling up a thread as a new member, look at the dates of the thread to see if it is old.

Thanks for replying so fast. I hoped it will be available. Damn luck of mine. Any knowledge where to find some kind of tutorial for integral tomahawk?
