INTER FRAME FOLDERS???

WHAT IS THE BEST METAL TO USE FOR THE HANDLES OF AN INTER FRAME FOLDER? I FIGURE STEEL AND BRASS WOULD MAKE IT TOO HEAVY, AND REGULAR ALUMINIUM IS TOO SOFT. THANKS AND TAKE CARE! MICHAEL

416 is hard to beat for interframes.

THANKS DARREL AND TIM! I THOUGHT STAINLESS WOULD MAKE THE KNIFE TOO HEAVY. NOT THE FIRST THING I'VE BEEN WRONG ABOUT. I'M FIXIN TO TRY MY HAND AT MAKING AN INTERFRAME SWITCHBLADE. IF IT COMES OUT NICE, I'LL POST A PICTURE OF IT FOR ALL TO SEE. IF IT DOESN'T COME OUT NICE, YOU'LL NEED SCUBA GEAR TO SEE IT CAUSE I'M THROWING IT OFF NAVARRE BRIDGE. TAKE CARE!!! MICHAEL

May I please ask you gentleman where you aquire your 416 stainless?? all i can find in 1/4" is only 1" wide. The knife i designed requires 1/4" by 1 3/8". thanks!!!! michael

trugrit sells 416 in a bunch of sizes...on my link page theres a link to their site.. also....for many years ron lake made his interframes out of aluminum...you have to get the good aircraft alloy...but it is plenty tough....i have used it for bolsters in a number of folders...dont remember the alloy no. but if youre interested tommorrow i can look on a piece and email you....the aluminum would be a good place to start. after you get it wired you could move up to 416...on both of them...however....when you mill out a pocket out of a solid piece of anything...you are going to get some warpage, this is what seperates the men from the boys....and why a lot of knifemakers quit making interframes....persevere...

Yes Tom, I would like to know the number of the aluminium, please. Is there a way to cut down on or even eliminate the warpage? Like maybe using a certain type or liberal amounts of cutting fluid, or making vary thin cuts, or even waiting for a cooling period between cuts? Thanks for your help Tom!!!! I'm finally getting a good start at making folders, and I believe this will keep me in the knife making biz. Take care! Michael
