INTEREST CHECK: Beckerhead labeled and / or numbering on your knives

spark, please make sure you have your merchantile flag set or we'll have to tell the board owner :)

.357 - if you want to be the guinea pig, it'll be $79.99 - $69.99 for the knife, $10 for the laser, and I'll put your username on the reverse side for free.

I have no idea. It probably would be cooked onto the steel itself, so if you did a chemical strip it probably would be, but attacking it with a scotchbrite may rub it off completely. When I'm etching bare steel I have to put a ceramic coating on the area to be engraved in order for a mark to show up, but with this I'm just marking the coating.

Ok, how about you do it, see what it looks like, i'll strip it, see what it does, and if it comes off I can send it back in and get you to etch the bare steel? (plus I have a 14 I might send to get etched if this one needs re-etched...)

How big do you want it, and which font style so far?

Typeface in constantinia

First set is Small Caps vs All caps in normal, second is bold face

I prefer the small caps -- no preference on bold vs. regular, although if you go with the 1.5" long engraving, the regular font might be eaiser to read than the bold.
If things don't work out with .357, or if you need a second guinea pig, $79.95 sounds like a fair price and I have no need for the off-side engraving.

The one from Post #27
I think about the size of the mockup in post #32, but closer to the top of the blade, maybe the top of the bladeforums text about 1/8 or so from the top of the blade? and same from the handle for the end of the beckerhead text.
Same for username on the other side, the size of the big text, 1/8 from the top, 1/8 from the handle?

The laser etching on the tweener FPR's remain pretty visible after stripping. I'm guessing these will too.

I think this will be a very popular mod. I'm interested too.

It can't be that close to the handle. The laser has a lot of back and forth travel and if it's closer than 1/2" then the head will crash into the handle itself and cause the knife to rocket out of alignment (and possibly damage the laser head too)

If I have to physically remove the handles off each one then this becomes a giant pain in the ass to perform.

The head clears the handle, but because this is going on the bevel, the knife has to be physically leveled and aligned with the laser head. Unfortunately that prevents this being within .125" of the handle. The edge limit I have is the choil

Spark,
We are going to need video of the knife rocketing out of the machine :)

ok, 1/2 from the handle is fine, but can it stay close to the top of the blade?
in the future, if people send in blades should they send them in without the handles if they want them close then?

I just took a picture of a 16, I'll post that up in a second. The 16 is different from the 14 I previously linked. It has laser engraving along the top of the blade taking up a 7/8th" x 5/16" area

Usable space on the 16 is around 2.5" wide x 1.125" tall, 3" wide if the height is .75" Here's a couple mockups

Here's what the knife looks like. The boxes show rough engravable areas.

Smaller version inline with the existing KA-BAR laser engraving. This would probably blend in better for most people.
